I'm looking at the Alienware r3 15, and the standard configuration comes with 8gb of ddr4 ram. Is that enough for Overwatch and other games? You can upgrade it, so I was wondering if I needed 16 gb of ram

Many games use 8 gb, if you want to multi task for example you have many software open .
You can also add later 8 gb later, the prices increased a lot or they may increase it more.
16 gb isn't overrkill, many gamers are buying it.

I'd check prices of how much it'd cost to upgrade the ram yourself. Go with whichever route works best. 8GB will work, but 16GB will let you play games and still have other apps open/running at the same time.
