Charger? You don't need no stinking charger! The N3DS come with the Wave chaging feature just like IOS 8. A minute and a half in the microwave and you are good to go.

I've tried using the NDS adapter plus but for some reason it just gave me a corrupted save error when the gateway method didn't

Your kids must be the coolest kids in school. I am not sure how many kids have access to stuff like Gateway or Sky3DS or even know about it. I would have gone nuts if my parents gave me a flashcard for my Gameboy instead of buying each game and waiting an eternity for birthdays or Christmas.
