Things Needed:

1. Apache v1.1 (Download)

2. IMGBurn (Download)

3. UlaunchElf (Download)

With this one it depends on what game you want to use. I'm gonna use 007 Agent Under Fire, as it seems to give the best results.

For Slims: This video will show you how to block the senors so that you can swap disc.

All Credit for the video goes to gamedexterity.

For Fats: You just need a credit card (or gift card), cut it to make a slide tool, take the faceplate off of the disk drive (it pops on and off), and use the tool to quickly swap the discs.

You can also take apart your PS2 Fat. In which you just take out the magnet, take out the disc, put in the backup and replace the magnet.

Step 1: Make an iso out of the game.

Step 2: Rename the BOOT.elf from the ulaunchelf rar and rename it to DRIVING.ELF.

Step 3: Start up Apache and use it to open the iso.

Step 4: Click on other DRIVING.elf in Apache.

Step 5: Go to the top and select the tab "ISO Tools" and then select "Change TOC for Selected File"

Step 6: Change the size "dec" to 915196.

Step 7: Click out of it and go back to "ISO Tools" and then select "Update Selected File"

Step 8: Go to the file you renamed update the original.

Step 9: Burn the modified ISO to a DVD

Step 10: Put in the game and USB Stick with the FMCB files.

Step 11: Play until level two and go back to the main menu.

Step 12: Quickly replace the disc with the backup.

Step 13: Go back to Level 2 and start it. It should start up ulaunchelf.

Step 14: ulanuchelf will start up, press O to go into the FileBrowser menu.

Step 15: Select mass, that is your USB.

heres where i am at right now:

i got a madcatz brand memory card from my older bro., but i feel it's kinda outta date(he made it back in summer of 2012) and he also did not do a good job of it, he told me he has had some probs with it, but it plays the games mostly fine and for the most part..... yeah it is working, but after doing some looking into everything......... i'm looking to play both PS2 & PS1 games from my USB harddrive, and he is missing some files on the card, he WILL NOT do anything for me for free or at a fair price!(to mess with the card he wants $30)............... so i was wanting to mess with it, and maybe re-do it all myself since i am very low on cash

i do have it set up to play and can play PS2 & PS1 games, but i just feel the files on the card are out-of-date and/or some more files can be added

EDIT: i have added photos of everything

Oh! Sorry for misunderstanding. So at this point you already have a Free McBoot memory card?
From what I see you're just one revision behind the scene. You're on 1.8 and 1.8b was the last version ever released.
You could load an elf file to perform a reinstall if you feel you're "outdated" (which is understandable, 1.8b did change quite a bit)
PM me if you need assistance with anything related to this. :)
(Oh, and don't pay $30)

Does this (permanently) install/modify any software on the PS2 itself? And can anyone explain this method?

No. It installs the softmod onto a memory card of your choice.
That "guide" seems rather fishy... Never heard of such a method, but hey if you give it a try and it works let us know!

I use the SwapMagic method, and everything went smoothly. Ran the FMCB from the menu, went to the OSD menu that it should have. As soon as I restart the ps2, however, I'm back to square one. Even though the files are still on the memory card. Any ideas?

You probably didn't hit format it/install it with the FMB Installer. If it launches to a modded screen you need to launch the FMB Installer.
If that's not the case, try a different memory card.
And I'm 99.9% sure you did this but I'll type it anyway: When you start your PS2 is the memory card in slot 1 and is there no disc in the tray?

Jon, that's exactly what I did. I'll try it again, though. And yes, the card is in slot one and no disc in tray. It worked perfectly with a different ps2, so it may or may not be the system. One of the silver slims.

Post your system information.

Super Necro bump, sorry. But I have a problem with uLaunch: when I try to select Free_Mcboot.elf, it says "this file isn't an ELF". Any ideas?
