Whaaaaat!! I can't believe there is a new kernel!

Also, I thought sdhc vs non sdhc was a hardware limitation on whatever devices that didn't support sdhc, not a software one?

Thanks for the news. I stuck it up on filetrip as well, however I tried it on my EZ4 lite deluxe but I am getting no loader found.

I will also have to hunt around for a SDHC of that size (any number of 1 and 2 gig micros but then it jumps right to 32 gigs).

That depends, some devices would use a hardware controller where some would have a more software defined one, others still could be kind of hacked to support something like SDHC. There was a pretty good explanation of all this from when people hacked in SDHC support for the Wii, and by several accounts Nintendo's own support was none too... standards compliant either.

Whoo double posting.

Found an old 8 gig microSDHC and got it booting in my EZ4 lite deluxe (released way before the new models came out). It does seem to have sacrificed SD support (my 1 gig card now shows an error) and DS mode with flashme just shows black screens (not ideal if you use it for a DS dumper, I still use my original EZ4 for tetrisDS as well but that is more laziness than anything else), it does also respect the DS setting for screens and leaves the other one powered off (both were issues with various GBA flash carts at points). For giggles I stuck a fat32 formatted 32 gig in and it booted, however I neglected to put any GBA games on there to test with.

Loader is half the old EZ3 fishes skin and a picture of mario from NSMB on the loader window.

I have no idea what optimised saver is in this case, however Kuwanger did mention something along the lines of not dumping the directory contents and speeding searches for file names up that way.

Edit. Lite deluxe booted a 32 meg game from RAM as well (mother 3 in this case) and I also wrote a small game (Advance Wars 2) to NOR and it worked for that.

SDHC support is really nice for my EZ4 cart but I realised that I can actually fit ALL the GBA roms I wanted to play on a 2gb Mini SD card. Never really used it for a DS cart in the first place anyways.

I'm quite surprised to see an update as well, but then again, the cart is still quite popular to the point that they started making them again when they said that they weren't. I just hope they release a better client. It's still pretty shitty.

This is great news now they just need to make it drag and drop.
For GBA flash carts that is easier said than done -- there is no easy way to detect the save type* of a GBA game on the GBA (for your PC it is easy enough but your PC is considerably more powerful than a 16Mhz ARM7 with less than half a meg of RAM). There are still ways (save database, user selection, one time wait and database as the GBA does the search it needs to do and various combinations of all three), however "press patch in simple PC program" works for most people so I do not imagine there will be much push for that. Equally it would only be cosmetic and things like pal park in pokemon and GC linkups would not immediately start working where they did not before.

*to say nothing of soft reset, sleep patches, cheats and the like.

Agreed, however this probably counts as future proofing at some level as we probably will be able to get microSDHC for a few years yet and legacy microSD are starting to get slightly harder to come by. Granted with them being used in lots more things I do not imagine facing something similar to what we see for miniSD now but hey.

I have a 2GB miniSD, should I install this update or some games will stop working?
If you like what you have (and 2 gigs is a lot of GBA games, probably most that people would care to play) then there is no great need to update save perhaps for the increased save speeds. There might also be issues with 2 gigs but as others said (and I should have checked) it is probably just the need to copy everything off, reformat as FAT32 and copy everything back.

If you plan on getting a SHDC or want to help test this out then maybe consider it.

I bought the EZIV for Christmas, do all EZIV support SD/MicroSD?

And how do I install/use cheats on EZIV?

Before today no EZ4 of any type supported SDHC. With this update it looks like all models should be supported -- the EZ4 lite deluxe I tested this with was made and sold long before the new batch/2013 edition that most people are buying these days and this seems aimed more at those.

I still have to test some of the older models to properly confirm it but if the EZ4 LD works with this update then it is pretty likely the rest will.

However in your case I would hold back on the updates until some more people have tested things and maybe had some bugs worked out.

Edit. Missed the cheats part.
For the most part we tend to point people at GBAATM
http://gbatemp.net/threads/gba-auto-trainer-maker-gbaatm.99334/

The EZ4 does supposedly have cheat support in the loader (the EZ3 it is based upon certainly does) but it is usually pretty broken where GBAATM tends to be simple enough to get working. This new loader may change things (I heard that a lot of stuff was polished up as part of this) but I will have to confirm that later.

Just did a short test.
I updated the EZ-Flash IV (old batch I think, bought it 3 years ago) with the update file on a 2gb Mini SD. After updating the MiniSD still works. Also a 16gb micro SDHC in a MicroSD to Mini SD Adapter now works. Games still need to be patched to save as far as I see (just tried Zelda Minish Cap for that).

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

i think only the red mario kart edition phat was v5

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

  • cearp @ cearp:
@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
