maybe a really silly question but after prodding about with this could we technically remove the updates from the iso's? i guess the updates would be stored on seperate partition of the games?

Even if you removed the update, there's no loader to be able to play the edited game...

We can open szs files with every file explorer right ? and view the models perhaps also?

Gericom is adding support for big-endian SARCs (which often have the extension: szs or sarc). I think - other than the endianness - they are the same (or very similar) to the SARCs used in 3DS games, which EFE has support for.

Yes, they are the same AFAIK. Also, note that .szs is (almost always?) Yaz0 compressed SARC whereas .sarc is just the raw archive. A lot of this stuff is detailed at MK8.tockdom.com

As a reasonably informed guess, I'd say it depends on the level of access we have to the WiiU. Once we have access on par with the Wii (User + Kernel + IOSU + FakeSign + Persistent) there should be no reason we can't have stripped .wbfs-like images. Same thing on the PSP; throw out junk sectors, and compress the image to a .ciso (since all images are made using the PSP UMD drive through it's own hardware decryption (KIRK/SPOCK), they are already decrypted).

Just found this little snippet posted my mathieulh way back when how complicated this works internally; the point being that from a user point of view, all they do is use a dumper to dump their own UMDs (or acquire them otherwise) and it works with a CFW that has an iso driver.

For those who wonder, spock cmd 0x09 key is used to decrypt UMD keys stored in idstorage, those keys are then used by spock cmd 0x08 to decrypt the UMD master key (per disc key) Then this key is used in spock cmd 0x0A to decrypt the UMD raw sectors. Each different psp regions seems to have its own sets of UMD keys.

Sorry for the gravedig, but I'm new here and I'd like to create an OPEN SOURCE tool which does the same thing as DiscU. Is there any place to download ripped games online or am I going to have to rip them myself?

We can't give direct links and you're really not supposed to ask for them. (forum rules)

That said, scene release info sites can be beneficial as search hints, and are allowed.

I doubt you'd wanna do it after checking out VGMToolBox's ISO extractor. It enables people to select files they want, rather than decrypting and dumping everything.

Ahh, thanks. Did not know that existed. I'm still interested in programming something though. Is there something I could make that currently doesn't exist that would be useful here?

I'm trying to have a play with this on Super Mario 3D World EU but getting error:

"Either the key is wrong or this is not a valid Wii U image (extract)!"

Can someone please verify these hashes for the .wad are correct?

I'm having a hard time extracting two specific wud images with DiscU:

  • Wii Fit U (USA) WUP-P-ASTE
  • The LEGO Movie Videogame (EUR) WUP-P-ALAP

I'm using DiscU v2.1b - is there any newer version or am I doing something wrong?
Wii Fit U shows up in the Loadiine v1.0 compatibility sheet so I guess there is a way to decrypt/extract it.

Here is the output from DiscU:

to answer my own question - DiscU is buggy and can't handle certain .wud files.
the generic iso extractor of vgmtoolbox can be used to extract those images - WII U images require 'ckey.bin' in the vgmtoolbox\external\wiiu directory, and 'disckey.bin' in the same directory as the source .wud image file.
