I'm wondering, can I add RAM from a broken laptop I have?
I found my old Samsung RV411 thrown in a closet today, opened it up and saw it has 2gbs of ram.

I currently use an ASUS X550CA which has 4GB DDR3 ram running at 800mhz according to CPU-Z.
The ram I found is 2GB DDR3 1333mhz.

I want to know if I can simply open up my ASUS, pop the stick in there and everything will work.
Also, would this give me any performance increase at all?

Thanks in advance.

800mhz in CPU-Z is actually 1600mhz (because DDR=Double Data Rate, speed is double of the actual clock)
If you have free RAM slots in your laptop you can certainly put that stick in there. Chances are all the slots are populated though. Also, because the sticks aren't identical, I believe you'll be dropped down to single channel memory, which will affect RAM speed but you might not notice the difference.
Also, you'll need to drop the RAM down to 1333mhz in BIOS so that you don't overclock the 2GB stick. You probably won't notice much of a difference from that though.

According to CPU-Z I'm already in single channel mode. And I have checked my laptop already, there are 3 free RAM slots, it's fine in that sense :P
And what happens if I don't drop the ram speed down? I'll do it anyways, but still.

I've done it a couple of times, hell the lappies of me mum n dad run RAM sticks from different laptops.
It works perfectly fine, as a matter of fact, the increase in RAM storage sped up the laptop dramatically (even if 1 stick is clocked lower then the other)

Glad to know, I'll be doing it then and posting results here. :)

Ofcourse, this is old obselete DDR2 RAM I'm talking about but it works perfectly fine.
Did it with SDRAM back in the 00's and DDR in the early 00's as well.
Both laptop and desktop.

If you don't drop down the RAM speed it'll likely overclock the second stick and will probably be unstable.
It might actually detect that the second stick is 1333mhz and drop down the speed automatically, however. I'm not sure on that.

I believe it detects the one with the lowest speed and sticks to that globally, unless you manually overclock it (which isn't possible on most laptops)

Same.. Unless you tinker with it (and very rarely you can in a craptop) , usually it will drop to the slowest ram clock

Tried it out, apparently the stick is dead because I get a black screen but the PC is still on.

No real damage done so I'll try it out later.
I'm kinda sick and don't have a lot of energy right now :wtf:

I have an old hp i used the ram charger wifi cards harddrive lcd and power cord from broken pc's i have. i have noticed though that ram tends to not work so well when you have more than one however its not that much a difference.
