I prefer MPC over VLC. It's a nice, lightweight player, and I like knowing that when my video plays it's because I have the right codecs set up on my system, and not because my player came with a bunch of proprietary codecs built in. I also like having the freedom of playing my video files in whatever video player I want once the right codecs are installed.
