I dunno. I have had absolutely zero issues gaming on Windows 8.1, at least zero issues as far as the OS is concerned, and I've played a wide variety of games from older to stuff only about a year old. All Windows 7 has on Windows 8 is pretty much just that people don't like Metro. That's really the only thing that might make Windows 8 "worse". Otherwise it is essentially improvements across the board.
I watched some comparisons with some 2014 games and Win7 gets more FPS that Win 8.1 it's only 10fps more, but with my hardware its a lot

I'm thinking those tests were a little wonky. I feel like if there was that big of a performance difference based on OS alone, it would be widely reported and people would still be clinging to 7 as if it were the last hope for the human race. That isn't the case though.

Here's a few lower end games I've greatly enjoyed these past couple of years:
Dust: An Elysian Tail
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams
Bastion
Transistor
Space Pirates and Zombies
Jamestown
Torchlight II

There's also Hearthstone. I'm not into it, though that's probably due to me not being into card games, but plenty of other people seem to enjoy it. Most of the games I listed you can get on GoG or Humble Store and they're DRM free.

What he said. There's virtually no difference between 8.1 and 7, and if anything 8.1 actually gets better FPS in most games. Granted. it's usually like a 2-4 FPS difference, it's still there.

Regarding games, I don't think anyone has mentioned Legend of Grimrock 1+2 yet. Both are excellent old-school styled dungeon crawlers and both will guarantee at least 15-20 hours of delicious gameplay.

As much as I like Windows 7 I've read the same thing you just said in more than a few comparisons. Windows 8 appears to have a tiny edge over 7 as far as gaming performance goes.

Hi guys! A Little update

Assassin's Creed I 1280x720 everything low. Full playable with a little micro freeze when moving fast the camera, the games looks awful mainly the buildings I can play it very well, AC2 should run the same way no?

Dead Island: 1280x720 medium settings, works better than AC, but the micro freeze happens very often, even in low settings, maybe I should look deeper on this one and mod it to remove some post processing effects and shadows.

The Stick Of Truth 1280x720 60fps flawlessly.

Maybe this info can help someone else with a similar hardware

Anyway I'm still open to suggestions and one last question, I was thinking to make the jump to 8.1 but with 2gb of ram maybe I should stay in XP for a while. What do you think?

Yeah, just stick with free-to-play, freeware, indies and older titles and you are just fine. With Intel HD just be aware that many games will have issues even if they are supposed to work. When I had my first low end rig with AMD APU setup, I usually just pirated game to see does it work because system requirements may vary for either side and it would suck to spend even couple euros to game that wouldn't run. I remember that Alan Waker ran 720p/~30FPS and they gave little pirate eye patch for Alan. Now I have bought that game so many times I lost count.

Here's few games I remember playing with that rig: Portal, Metro 2033, Bioshock, Mirror's Edge, Alan Wake, Batman Arkham Asylum, Trine, BIT.TRIP RUNNER, Dungeon Defenders, Orcs Must Die. Those are also the games that have been on X number of sales and bundles so if you are lucky some of your friends may have some spare keys left for some. Also those are the ones I remember playing from my thousand game library. Free games like Alien Swarm and TF2 use source engine which runs even on a potato.

If you are going to upgrade OS (and you definitely should from XP) then just go directly to 8.1 instead of making minor update to bit older OS. If you are being legit then 8.1 is only option. Having it for some time now I like it much more than 7 and metro is actually really neatly customizeable start menu.

Well i went full retard and installed 7 x86. And DX11 is amazing, for example Dead Island now works flawlessly without stuttering even with a lot of enemies in the screen. League Of Legends works in 1080p with 100fps (but i capped it in 60, in teamfights it drops a lot but never under 60\70) Maybe with 8.1 i can get a minor performance boost. But metro sucks i look it everyday in my W10 phone
