nVidia shield announce two new products

We're all familiar with the success rate that the nVidia shield brought to the gaming industry. Today nVidia announces two new products to the shield family that are available for preorder. The first is a gaming tablet that looks amazing it's even equipped with front facing speakers, as well as a stylus. the next is a nVidia shield wireless controller. But don't get your hope up to use it as as stand alone controller the controller only works with the Shield tablet.

The SHIELD Portable and SHIELD Tablet are specifically designed to connect to the Wireless Controller through WiFi-Direct feature.
This Controller will not connect to any other Android Devices, PCs or Laptops. The Controller ONLY works with those two devices.

In my opinion I personally think that you'd be better off just buying the nVidia shield since it's price is at $200 and you're still getting great specs. The tablet retails for $299, were as the gaming controller retails for $59.99

I was aware of Nvidia's Shield but honestly when it comes to handheld consoles the only two that exist for me are made by Nintendo and Sony, the Shield is more like just another Android device console-wannabe (handheld in this case) as if we didn't have enough.

I don't get why anyone would want to buy a wireless controller that can only connect to the shield when the exact same money buys you a xbone or a PS4 controller that (will) also work on virtually any PC, tablet and smartphone. Am I missing something?

Can't say much of the tablet, aside from the obvious note that they've got a lot of competition in that aspect. What will that tablet do that a gazillion others don't? It's even worse when they put things side by side. Not only does the original shield (the portable) looks cooler, it's also cheaper than the tablet. And they really need to at least put out WHY that is the case, as I doubt anyone is going to fork 100 extra bucks for crippled controls, a stylus and trine 2.

I agree that it's a dumb move, if nVidia sold it as a bluetooth controller tons of people would buy it. I think you'd be better off just buying a shield that way you can get the best of both worlds.

I agree, but my guess is that the Wi-Fi direct connectivity might be more responsive than connecting a PS3 controller via bluetooth.

they didnt even bother putting in a wacom digitizer and instead used their imitation of it, the res is too low considering the res's high end tablets and phones ship with now (ppi is probably bad as well)

Unlike many of those, this one is actually powerful and has a good controller, none of this touchscreen controller BS, which plagues most of these, and can run emulators full speed, even PSP is running full speed in many games now. It's one of the best Android devices on the market and doesn't suck.

the only advantage of that is that you have more bandwidth that a simple controller don't need, unless is a controller with screen like the Wii U gamepad(which uses a proprietary solution very similar to Wifi Direct).
using Wifi Direct for such a task is overkill and a waste of battery.

Everything I've thrown on my Nexus 7 2013, they've all ran at full speed (except for DC emulator, as well as poorly coded emulators) so I wonder how this will compare. Either way, I still feel that iOS and Android just aren't suitable for dedicated handheld and console gaming right now.

For emulation, the Shield handles most consoles (except DC) very well, even PSX and N64, so for that, it would suitable, not to mention steaming games from a PC, and for $200, considering the hardware, the price isn't too bad.

Meh. It's not awful, just kind of boring. It's a shame, too; if it was worse, at least I could say something like, "Leave it to nVidia to make a controller that doesn't work in-vidya."

A let-down all around.

Haven't tried N64 yet, but PSX (ePSXe to be exact) runs perfectly fine on mine as well. The San Andreas port is probably the most intensive game I've ran on it, and it runs just as smooth as the PS2 version. AFAIK, I haven't even seen my tablet lag once, except when an app crashed.

Tablets that are a year or two old always run well. No need to upgrade your devices until at least two years are up, even then they can last longer. I don't really see anyone needing another new tablet for another 5 years if they bought one in 2013.

Dreamcast emulation runs fine on my Shield, or at least the games that aren't broken do.

As for people wondering how powerful this will be, the Tablet will have the new NVIDIA K1 SoC, which will figuratively eat and then shit out and then shit on any other SoC available. Hell, the Tegra 4 (which the current Shield has) already does that anyways.

What do you mean except DC? If the game is not hindered by the emulator itself (Issues with the gfx plugin and what not) it runs games full speed.

I already beat SA1, Crazy taxi 2 pyramid on it and I'm playing Grandia 2 atm. All full speed.

Then again, I admit I haven't followed Dreamcast emulation all that much and haven't seen a lot in the way of development. It would seem it has gotten better over time, my mistake, I didn't mean to make such an assumption.

The Tegra 7 was a battery hog, I doubt this will be any different who knows.
Also the thing costs a bit to much for my taste $300 for 16GB, plus you need a controller which costs $60 (if you don't have a compatible one)
That's pretty close to a current-gen console.

Hopefully this isn't the Shield 2 Nvidia was talking about.
