MegaZeux DS 10/7/09
Update
btb10709.jpg

This port of MegaZeux to the DS supports smaller game worlds. Extract the files to the /games/megazeux in the ROOT of your MicroSD card. A Slot-2 RAM expansion pack can be used for larger worlds. For those interested, MegaZeux is a ZZT clone originally written by Greg Janson and is now Open Source. ZZT was a game creation system for DOS written by Tim Sweeney.

OMG, MegaZeux is so NOT a clone of ZZT. If you had EVER used ZZT, you'd know that right off the bat. MegaZeux was inspired by ZZT, but is in NO WAY a clone.

thanks for that useful bit of drivel.

i love the use of "OMG" and the caps lock key, really states your case.

now lets quote the authors homepage, and then you can say you're sorry for ripping on something I typed as news.

You'll need to download a copy of MegaZeux to play my MZX games. Although it was originally a DOS program, MZX will run on any operating system these days.

i agree with the statement, it is a clone of zzt, regardless of anything else the core element remains the same.

Looks okay, but woooow the DS in the pic is missing one hinge, I wonder how it's still able to function.

The hinge is just a piece of plastic. The top-screen data lines are transferred by ribbon cable, and while that is obviously at higher risk due to not being kept straight by a functioning dual hinge, but not broken yet.

DSMZX author here.

The hinge broke almost exactly after it went out of warranty. The hardware works fine, except you have to hold the screen up with a finger, so it's too much of a hassle to play games on. Now I use it for homebrew development/testing, since I don't really care what happens to it.

There definitely seems to be a problem with EZFlash hardware. Unfortunately, I don't have any to test. Can anyone who's having problems run this memory tester for me: http://www.pineight.com/ds/memtestARM-0.03.zip If that works, but DSMZX doesn't, I'll switch to that version of the RAM Unlocking API. If neither of them work, can DSLinux detect your RAM?

Thanks!

Test hardware:
NDS Lite
EDGE v1.45
EZ-Flash 3-in-1 [First version]

Megazeux: Fail
memtestARM "EZ-Flash": Fail
memtestARM "Unknown": Works! (Detects "EZ-Flash")

Strange that memtestARM didn't detect my pack when I correctly specified the type...

Interesting! Since dsmzx doesn't specify the type, it may work. Here's a test version with the RAM Unlocking API code from memtestARM: http://kvance.com/fora/mzxrun-eztest.nds.zip That's just the .nds image, make sure you have the rest of the supporting files in /games/megazeux. Let me know how it runs!

The dude can type what he wants, it doesn't make it true.

Go google ZZT.

this time it booted up with no issue using the 3in1new. i tested with proton but that still gives a GURU mediation error as others have said. i'll try some other levels to see what happens.

I've had a report of the new RAM unlocking code working for EZFlash hardware, so I've bumped the version to build 2.1 with that code added. There's no other changes.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the info. Proton crashes on the first board (their cave/hideout thing) on my SuperCard CF, so there may be a different problem with this game specifically.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.
