Nintendo DS Releases Expected For October 2008

Another big month for the DS, some real big hitters coming and an awful lot of crap too. As before I've not listed the Japanese releases (they will still feature in the weekly threads) and I've missed out the titles that A. Have had no media or B. Look like crap and that nobody would want anyway.

Read to know when a game could be dumped:
These dates are what retailers say is out unless stated otherwise, sometimes they make dates up for pre-ordering purposes. These dates could also be "shipping dates" which usually means that that's the date when games get shipped to stores so a game could either be in stores on that day or after. Some games may get delayed some others not listed may appear but at the moment of posting these are correct. Also just because a game is released in stores it doesn't mean that they'll appear on our internets but NA titles usually appear on our 'nets Wednesday night UK time. I love you with stealth.

Another damn RPG, now I like the genre its just that, I wish people made games of a different genre or at least try something different, like this game.

Players enter the world of Zubalon to help the colourful and zany inhabitants, the Zubos, defeat an evil force which is bent on world domination. Players can befriend the Zubos they meet along the way, feed and nurture them, help them gain skills and strength, and assist them in their battles with the enemy, the dastardly Zombos. A key element to Zubo is music, which is intrinsic to Zubalon from its tuneful plant life through to its currency of musical notes. The player uses the music to drive the battles forward, synchronizing their stylus action and tapping in time with the musical beats to win.

EA seem to be really trying to do better nowadays and their future DS titles seem to actually want to push the its capabilities. The game looks different to what most RPG's try to offer and it does look like a lot of effort has gone into it.

This game was featured on the very first release thread I did back in early 2007, and its finally coming out!

This is for people who loved Katamari Damashi, and want more fun, silly puzzle action. The premise is simple: You're a little dog with a big appetite. His goal is to be the biggest dog ever, and he'll achieve that by eating everything in a level - from small meals to big buildings.

Scores have been ok for this but none have been great. So maybe a game we'll play when there's not much else to play.

Fifa on the DS has always been good (well not the Street games) and each instalment was an improvement on the last.

Powered by a game engine built exclusively for Nintendo DS that operates at 60 frames per second, FIFA Soccer 09 delivers dramatically more responsive, intelligent and realistic physical action. Double the frame rate enables players to move more fluidly around the pitch, react more intelligently to the action and creates a much faster paced game. Players make more intelligent runs, deliver crisp, beautifully placed passes and snap off precision shots.

From the moment you step onto the pitch, FIFA Soccer 09 challenges you to think and react like a real player through the popular feature innovation Be A Pro – now debuting on Nintendo DS. Gamers can play over multiple seasons and the mode features the unique Be A Pro camera that tracks your player, re-creating the excitement and rush of racing in on goal. In Be A Pro you choose a professional player or create your own player and then develop his skills in the outfield position of your choice until he becomes a national legend. Every match performance is evaluated in real-time with in-game feedback and a final rating.

So yet again it seems like EA have upped the series for the DS, everything sounds like it has been improved. There are over 500 teams and 30 leagues as well as online modes.

Finally a localisation of Bleach DS 2nd: Kokui Hirameku Requiem.

Bleach: Dark Souls on the Nintendo DS brings an exclusive storyline, expanded cast of playable characters and fast multi-plane fighting action for up to four players via Wi-Fi. Players will also build a power-packed Spirit Card Deck and collect power crystals to augment their spirit card powers on the lower screen and dish out moves that will directly affect their opponent's gameplay. With a burgeoning cast of 44 characters including the ability to play as Hollows, players can spend hours experiencing furious fighting gameplay and unlocking personal character stories all based on the series' story arc.

The first was a very good fighter, not tried the Japanese version of this one though.

I liked the Japanese version of this but I felt that it played better on the PSP.

Mr. ESC, professional escape artist, must rescue people from burning buildings, flooded malls, and more in the creative puzzle game EXIT. Victims whom you've saved accompany you on your way out of the building, requiring your guidance every step of the way. The game includes over 100 scenarios in an array of settings, from burning hotels to a shopping centre caught in a blizzard. Exit DS retains the stylish look of the series while making use of some of the DS's unique features for possible gameplay advantages. The top screen shows a map as you work your way through the stages, allowing for the bottom screen to zoom in close to the action. You can chose to either point to locations to make Mr. Esc move, or you can select to draw out Mr. Esc's paths with the stylus.

DO NOT PLAY WITH STYLUS CONTROLS! I had to capitalise that as the stylus controls are bad, so change it to buttons and you'll have a good game.

A very long awaited sequel to a game that was released into the arcades 20 years ago (which has aged badly). I finished the Japanese release and loved it.

The thrilling ninja action of The Legend of Kage 2 takes over both Nintendo DS screens, fully utilizing the dual-screen presentation and scrolling to draw players into a dynamic world filled with exhilarating mid-air combat. With rich, elaborate stages and a compelling story that follows the tale of two protagonists, The Legend of Kage 2 breathes renewed excitement into the classic action adventure experience.

Its nothing new but anyone who loves arcade games will love it.

I take it the first game sold enough for a sequel, shame.

Spectrobes: Beyond The Portals for Nintendo DS continues the story of Rallen and Jeena, interplanetary patrol officers who discover, excavate, awaken and train mysterious fossilized creatures known as Spectrobes and then use them to battle enemies. The story surrounds the origins of mysterious portals that lead to distant dimensions.

I fount the first game to be incredibly tedious with the bland gameplay, sound & graphics can't say I care about this but I know the first has its fans.

Activision are weird, they bought Sierra but decided to release this game instead of Ghostbusters. Not sure why, Spyro hasn't sold that well since the 90's & not one person has thought "OH HOT TITS A NEW SPYRO GAME" whereas Ghostbusters is a game people want and will do well on nostalgia alone. Oh well at least the DS version looks good.

Looks like the developers saw how well received the last GBA game was and has instead carried on to make something similar instead of the last sucky game. It looks like a mixture of 2D side on platforming and 3D Panzer Dragoon style shooting. I didn't show the screens as they look like crap, see the video instead. I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays, could be one of those nice surprises.

Remember this series? Sucked didn't it? Well ok I kinda didn't mind the overhead PC ones but the 3D games sucked major balls. For some reason DSI/Zoo Games have decided to buy the series and bring it back. So as usual DSI/Zoo get release another game based on a license that no one wanted.

Assume the role of Timmy, mini action adventure hero, and fight the forces of evil in "Army Men: Soldiers of Misfortune." Timmy's Tan Army Men action figures have run amok, capturing his Green Army Men, and attempting to take control of his little slice of suburbia! It's up to you to defeat the enemy, save your toys and family, and restore order to your home! The house is your playground as you control a 3 inch tall Timmy and a slew of toy weaponry to keep his tan Army Men from achieving "Global Home Domination." You'll never look at your toys the same again...

So this time you don't even play as the green guys! Way to go guys, I hope you go bankrupt soon.

Originally a Bullfrog game and then EA bought Bullfrog (as they do) and then released on the DS in Japan earlier this year. For some reason EA are letting someone else publish this outside of Japan.

Populous pioneered the God simulation genre. Featuring touch-screen controls that utilize the dual-screens, players manipulate 5 elementally-imbued gods, each with their own unique miracles, within an extensive single-player campaign. Within the multiplayer wireless mode, up to 4 players can unleash earthquakes, tidal waves and raging volcanoes onto rival players' lands.

The Japanese version was hacked with some English and I had a quick go and fount it to be a decent port.

Being Ubisoft, you'd think it would be called Dinzsuarz.

Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs brings all the mysteries, wilderness and variety of the world of dinosaurs to Nintendo DS. In the game each player will have the opportunity to incarnate the dinosaur he prefers. Pick a favourite out of 26 different species, from the ravenous predator to the witty scavenger, and defend your territory in nine different maps, each with unique features and all-new threats. Customize your dinosaur using special eggs earned through victories in combat, earning new thorns, feathers and bones that will make yours the strongest dinosaur.

A player's objective in Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs is to fight and win against other dinosaurs using a unique and highly intuitive combat system based on dexterity and entirely controlled with the stylus. A multiplayer mode gives players the opportunity to fight against each other two ways: one-to-one Quickmatch or complete Tournament, with up to eight players!

Being a casual Ubisoft game it might be crappy but I dunno, maybe its worth trying.

How awesome is this looking to be? A sequel of sorts to the mobile game "Order of Shadows" but you don't really need to play that game to get on with this, which is good because that game was really dull and boring.

This time you play as a member of the Ecclesia, an organization that has sworn to defeat the evil forces of Dracula. Use the brand new Glyph attack system which has more than 100 different combinations to battle Dracula and his minions throughout 20 explorable areas. Take part in side quests and collect items to power up your character in the next great Castlevania game produced by Koji Igarashi.

The game features more outdoor sections this time which include forest, deserts & oceans. The battle system is said to give something new to the gameplay.Sell and buy items and equipment you have found while playing with other players & also go head to head with others too utilizing Nintendo DS Wi-Fi Connection. People who have played it said that while it retains the Castleroid feel, its the first Castlevania game in a long time to not feel like a clone of "Symphony of the Night". For me Konami have gone downhill, especially on the DS but you can always expect a great 2D Castlevania game from them. None of the screens I could find gave this justice, see the videos instead.

Fans of Shadowgate & Hotel Dusk will want to keep an eye on this game.

In this adventure game, players will take on the roles of two different characters trying to understand out their past, present, and intertwined destiny. Will you be able to discover the true meaning of theresia?

It is a tale of twisted love between a mother and her daughter. Raised from the ashes of war and torture, Leanne has no memory of her past. Will she find the true meaning of her existence through her past, or will she be consumed by her destined future?

The protagonist, a brilliant doctor and owner of the local orphanage, develops a vaccine to combat the high fever that has affected the children in his orphanage. Unfortunately, as with every great creation, his discovery comes only at great cost. Will he be able to atone for his mistake, or will his creation end mankind?

Should be a sleeper hit, and being a sucker for horror I really hope it turns out well and doesn't get lost with the bigger titles.

This has been out in Japan since October last year and a lot of people took a shine to it. And as always when I wrote this up last year, I hoped that Atlus would pick it up and guess what? They did!

The quiet town of South Arc is about to have some monster trouble. Foul creatures with serious attitude problems have infested nearby forests and are now slowly moving into the village. The townsfolk, fearful for their safety, do not even dare to leave their homes. Calls for help have gone unanswered, likely because every other town in the Kingdom is similarly troubled.

You play this young fella and you end up finding a talking shovel and the discovery of this talking shovel begins an eccentric adventure where you become the master of the monster lair! As the shovel's new owner, you're given the incredible job of digging a dungeon and hunting the monsters that come to live in it. Be the architect of your lair & transform a small hole in the ground into a huge dungeon for hunting monsters! Fill it with over 20 different types of rooms, including Chapels, Cellars, Stables, Trash Dumps, and more to attract different types of monsters and help you obtain different items. Share your lair & challenge your friends to reach the end of your custom monster lair and see what monsters and items are waiting in theirs. Trade designs over local wireless and prove that you're the best dungeon digger around!

Sounds like a winner to me, and a good time killer, I am kinda bored with these sort of titles but this one sounds like it'll be fun and different to what we usually get. Please watch the trailer as it gives a better impression than these screens ever will.

Activision let yet another franchise go downhill, can this new title revive the Spider-Man games? Spider-Man on the DS as been pretty meh, the GBA had much better games (even Spider-Man 3 was good on that) and it looks like this might just follow in those games footsteps as Activision have said next to nothing about the DS game apart from issuing two screens.

Hopefully it will be a good side-scrolling game like the GBA titles, and without the bad touch screen controls but I can't say I'm expecting it to be anything but a cheap cash in. Why don't they get the developers of the good PSX/DC/N64 games to do one on the DS?

My god I hope this isn't as buggy as the last game which I did really like and love but the bugs made me stop playing it.

Rune Factory 2 is set several years after the first game. The evil Sechs Empire has been defeated, and the Kingdom of Norad is once again at peace. Things may not stay that way for long, however, as dark premonitions foretell of dangers to come. It's up to player to uncover the source of these premonitions and bring peace to the kingdom once more.

In a first for the Rune Factory series, the story of Rune Factory 2 is multi-generational. Players begin the game as Kyle, a strange man who comes to Alvarna Village. Eventually, players will take on the role of Kyle's child, opening up a whole new adventure. It's an innovative feature that allows players to follow the story of their family and the townsfolk over two generations! Over the course of the story, players will build and develop a farm, befriend townspeople, raise monsters, take on quests, and find a wife. Rune Factory 2 offers innovative Touch Screen controls, easy-to-use menus, and an all-new compelling storyline.

The multi-generational should hopefully make this game be more of the same game. I was hoping for maybe a different setting and look but this is a Harvest Moon spin off remember. Maybe the Wii game will offer something new for those who might wanna miss this.

Hands up those who have been waiting for Sierra to give us a DS version of The Incredible Machine? Well it looks like it won't happen so this game will have to make do.

The game uses the stylus as a weapon to rid the Earth of alien invaders that have scattered across the planet. Become the ultimate Master of Mechanics by creating crazy contraptions to free humans, keep the mechanics in motion and defeat those pesky foes. Test your skills with more than 100 levels! Creative-thinking is key to clearing each level.

Use gravity shifters to change the direction of gravity, laser pistols and mirrors to cut objects, a vortex to make things disappear and many more gadgets designed to keep the mechanics in motion and clear the level. Take the Nintendo DS stylus and draw your own solutions as you build platforms, walls, portals and more! Design and create your own brain twisters and share them with friends to prove you are the greatest Mechanic Master! Share your own levels with friends or send a limited demo version of the game over a wireless connection

I want this game now! There is also another game like this coming out called "I Love Geeks".

I loved this on the PC way back in the early 90's, it was announced that the 2nd game would get ported to the DS in 2004 but that never happened.

Jagged Alliance is an explosive fusion of role-playing game and turn-based tactical combat, allowing players to become fully immersed in their characters. A new generation of gamers will be charged with liberating the Island of Metavira through the non-linear gameplay that made the 1994 original so popular amongst gamers.

Might not be to everyone's taste but fuck them. I hope its a good port as I'd like to play this on a handheld. There is no footage of the DS version so here is the PC version, looks about same.

They really should have got n-Space to do the DS version, and with the Call of Duty engine at least. I expected more from Vicarious Visions but then I guess they have lots of other games to concentrate on.

The Wii game is looking good too

Monster Lab is set in the eerie world of Uncanny Valley where the evil Baron Mharti rules with a cruel hand. The player takes on the role of an apprentice scientist who must perform a vast array of intricate experiments to create their very own monster from over 100 million possible monster part variations on offer.

Taking control of your monster, the player can then explore the land; searching for ingredients to make more monster parts, hunting out other monsters to defeat in combat, uncovering quests to embark upon or simply competing in the numerous mini-games available.

Looks pretty nice actually, very varied, the battles look like a 3D beat em up and then there's monster creating and all that. The Wii game also looks good. There is only video as all the screenshots published are of shit quality and don't really show what the game is.

Let's play "guess which game will suffer massive slowdown"

My vote's for Master Mechanics. That game looks like it's going to crawl from the snaps alone.

Busy week; lots of promising games. I'm really looking forward to Legend of Kage 2. I dabbled with the Japanese version, but wanted to wait `til I could fully enjoy it.

Next month's looking damn good, too.

Yeah for the Wii, this thread only covers DS games. The only DS Dokapon is Dokapon Journey! Nakayoku Kenka Shite and so far that hasn't been announced for US release.

EDIT: I did forget C.O.R.E., though I did read somewhere that it may not make the October release date. Still everything will be more accurate on the weekly threads.

Thanks hadrian.

I'm insanely surprised that there aren't really any games to my forte. This month had DQ4, kirby, and sonic. October doesn't have any must have games, and the only 2 games i'll try out are castlevania and bleach. I may end up keeping bleach because it's actually really fun if you play with other people through dl play. To bad, the load time is like 2 mins.

Yay, Rune Factory!!!! I loved the first one, and the HM games doesn't seem to interest me very much, so this will be great!

Also, I should really finish my Castlevania games......
