Sony to end support for the PlayStation Store on PS3, PSP, Vita

After rumors began brewing that Sony might finally put an end to PlayStation Store access on some of its older systems, the company has finally confirmed what some fans feared. Starting later this year, support for the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Portable will be ending. As of today, they’ve also shut down the old web store that allowed customers to purchase games for those platforms on their computer. This decision comes as a result of Sony wanting to unify and focus on their more modern and current systems: the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The PSP and PS3’s store access will be the first to go, on July 2, 2021, with the Vita to follow shortly after on August 27th. Players will still be able to download their already purchased games even after those dates, but once July and August rolls around, any digital games for those platforms will become unavailable to buy.

Time to back your stuff up! They had a good run, its hard to find most ps3 games anywhere these days now. When I do find ps3 games, they are usually priced at rip off prices.

And exactly as I expected when this was just a rumor, you can still download your purchases just fine, so all the idiots doomsaying and telling you to "QUICK DOWNLOAD ALL YOUR GAMES BEFORE THEY'RE GONE FOR GOOD!!!!" just wasted a whole lot of time and bandwidth for no reason.

So long as they allow you to continue downloading your purchases, I don't really care if they close the digital store personally. I've already played whatever PS3/PSP/Vita games I've wanted to play, so it's no great loss to me.
well first they will stop you from buying then in a year or two they will close it for good, they wont be making any money from it anymore becuase people cant buy anything so the servers will just start to be an expense with nothing to give for, give it a year or 2 and you will see, they dont have to keep servers going for 20+years or more, there is no law that says so.

I mean this was bound to happen. And it will happen to every MMO we play today as well. At least you can still download your games for the time being but even that will come to an end eventually, it is inevitable (Mr. Anderson).

Now, the smart move would have been to "unlock" all ps3 before that happens... aka letting players permanently decrypt their HDD so they can backup their games.

Also no, physical is not better, because very few games ship complete these days anyway.
I wouldn't play Smash without Banjo :)

Physical is still good for collection purposes, but don't count on it as a permanent way to play your games.

Main thing that upsets me in this situation is the impact on Rock Band. As a huge fan, it's frustrating, or in most cases, impossible to track down individual song DLCs for a console, as most sites just don't host downloads for them, and the ones that do are incomplete. So, buying them on the official storefront is about your only option. I mainly play on Xbox 360, but I still do often use my PS3 for it, and since my 360's RGH'd, I can't go online to download the DLCs there.. The Wii Shop Channel has long since disappeared, and soon, the PS3 shop is going away. Sure, you can still play most of these songs on Rock Band 4, and get them on the PS4/Xbox One storefronts, but who's to say Harmonix will make a fifth game for the later generations, and have those songs on the next storefront?

Besides, for a company that makes as much money as Sony does, with how they charge monthly for online access, is it really much of a burden to keep your customers happy, and willing to trust you, by continuing to support it?

Well... well...I am not really upset at all...
That way I will download all my PS1/PS2/PSP/PS3 games and play them, and not feel guilty.

On the plus side, maybe they'll stop releasing new PS3 firmware updates that brick people's consoles whenever they do stuff Sony doesn't like.

And maybe it will end game updates that they force you to install before playing. Those things take forever and when you're done, everything is exactly the same. I can't stand them.

seems [WAREZ] is going to get a lot of traction
I don't see it being particularly useful if they're still splitting files and not downloading anything after the first GB.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Good thing all 3 of those platforms were hacked to pieces, and it's pretty easy to find pretty much every digital game online.
Except for the fact that many PS3s can't run a full CFW yet, which (apparently) has better compatibility than Hen.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.
