Confirmed Nintendo Switch is using stock Nvidia Tegra X1, no modifications.

All is confirmed the Nintendo Switch is powered by stock Nvidia Tegra X1, same chipset used in Shield TV. The most surprising is the retention of 4 Cortex A53 processor cores, which have no use in the Nintendo switch as they can't be operated at the same time when Cortex A57 cores are running due to the ARM big.little configuration setup.

main-unit-6.jpg

Nvidia-T210.jpg

After subsequent processing of the GPU from the Nintendo Switch, we have determined that the processor is the Nvidia Tegra T210. The T210 CPU features 4 Cortex A57 and 4 Cortex A53 processor cores and the GPU is a GM20B Maxell core.

http://techinsights.com/about-techinsights/overview/blog/nintendo-switch-teardown/

Nvidia Tegra X1 features
  • 8 core CPU (4 x Cortex A57 and 4 x Cortex A53)
  • GPU is a GM20B Maxell core

A comparison to Shield TV. Switch specs on the left, and Shield TV on the right. The clock speeds are reported from Eurogamer, which are very much true.

  • RAM: 4GB vs 3GB
  • CPU: 1Ghz vs. 2Ghz
  • GPU: 3 modes:307.2Mhz/384Mhz/768Mhz vs 1Ghz

Shield TV is clocked higher initially in both CPU and GPU, but don't forget Shield TV can't keep these clock speeds up for long, it throttles down to the exact switch's dock clockspeeds. Which further supports a stock X1.

The Devs know what the hardware of the switch can do. All big players have since a long time the switch devkits in use. Holy moly.

Oh because Dragon Quest Heroes 1+2 ... its only a bad port to make easy and fast money. The "big" consoles conceal it with their raw power.
I can tell you as dev, you can create (for example with the unity engine) same games with an nicer grafic like DQH and they run very smooth on devices how have a lower power like an nintendo switch.

In my opinon square enix is negligent by this game. The could use a better engine and development enviroment.

A please at all. Calm down. The future brings better optimated games.

PS: Sorry for my english :) it will be improve in the future.

The fact that the developers know the capabilities of the switch is possibly the most worrisome part. Look at all upcoming titles for the Switch, even the ones without a confirmed release date, then look at 3rd party AAA games that will be released (or have recently been released) for the other platforms.

Actually a better example is just to look at one of the partnered companies, Ubisoft. We're getting Just Dance, Rayman, and Steep from them. No Far Cry. No Assassin's Creed. No Watch Dogs. No For Honor. No Tom Clancy games.

This is what I meant by the future looking bleak. Third party companies know what can be done with the switch, and whether it'll be worthwhile or not. The switch is getting only a small fraction of third party AAA games, and almost never at the same time as the other platforms. The fact that we're getting so little means that third party support isn't going to be prevalent in the near future. That's why our last hope is entirely set on a steady surge of good first party games to keep gamers invested in the switch just so the developers can think "Oh! Maybe it's worth the effort to scale down and port our games to the switch! Possibly even add switch specific features!"

Disaster in which sense exactly?

Splatoon, Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8, Mario Maker, Mario 3D World, New Super Mario U, Paper Mario, Zelda, Fatal Frame V, SMT x FE, Kirby, Captain Toad, Yoshi's Woolly World, Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros - All good titles you'd expect from a Nintendo console. I'll make this easy and skip backwards compatibility.

This is way way more than I got from Sony on my PS4 so far since its 2013 release. I'm curious as to how exactly did you think Nintendo did not deliver with the Wii U because regarding good exclusives it definitely delivered more than the competing consoles.
No Metroid = Disaster! /s

PS: And TBH, you got shittons of games on XB1, for all tastes and from several companies, shittons... and it has half the games of the PS4.
Nonetheless there's something wrong with the Wii U. Mine is collecting dust since a long time ago, and I own many games that I still don't play, many... But the menus, the system, the loading screens, everything is so slow and clunky that it is a drag to play. I remember back when playing ME3 on Wii U I really wanted to kill myself everytime I saw a loading screen.

PS2: I am very happy we don't get Far Cry, Assassins Creed, rest of generic boring AAA games. In the other hand I hope they bring original AAA games, not photocopied multiplatform boredom. I have the XB1 for that.

And X1 even at ~50% power portable mode is stronger than K1 by a fair bit, so there you go.
X1 is around ~50% compare to a K1. Switch chip is around 75+% theoretical power of an untouched X1, portable mode is around 30~40-%. That's not really a fair bit compare to K1.
But it has a good battery life, which is nice for this kind of device and it's enough for 720p. Nvidia Shield Tv generally was on 1080p TV screen.

I'm wondering, does the switch go to docked spec when docked or when charging. Meaning a charging non docked switch would have very good spec. I'mma check that. And seriously this charging port is really at the worst place...

So actually you end up buying a modded Nvidia Shield tablet :switch:

I personally don't mind the next Nintendo console being an Nvidia Shield Tablet or even an android port... it's just that the so called switch costs a hefty 300$, which could have actually been spent, for example, on an Alienware Steam machine that comes with an actual DDR5 Nvidia GTX gpu.

https://www.amazon.com/Alienware-Ma...=1489742649&sr=8-14&keywords=gaming+pc+nvidia

Nintendo are simply taking advantage of: The fact that a lot of people out there aren't tech savvy enough to realize the true hardware cost of the switch, and their reputation. (In addition, ofcourse, to the fact that they're continuing to squeeze their loyal fans for more and more money, but they've always been doing that, so we can't really blame it on the switch)

On the other hand, back when PS4 came out, I had been assembling a gaming pc for someone, while trying to match the performance of a PS4, which ended up costing roughly twice the cost of a PS4...

Hey, reading all the bitter comments, regardless of the side they're on, gives me my daily dose of Schadenfreude lol.

Yes, apparently, there were people on this very forum that could not grasp the idea that this will not be as powerful as it is a handheld with a tv out.

And everybody who said so was a 'moaner' a 'pessimist' and a 'piss taker', 'not giving nintendo a chance' and other nice things.

I call this having *realistic expectations*. :D

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I know that nintendo made a claim that this is a homeconsole, I know that everyone wanted this to be a homeconsole.
But this is not a homeconsole.. It is not even a handheld, it's a hybrid.. That is what Nintendo's vision was. (a bit of both)

Because it is a hybrid console it can not really be compared to anything except for maybe a smaller tablet which has a similar form-factor.

I don't understand whats the big deal here.. Do people always have to compare everything to something?
Does a product have to beat another product in an already estblished area to be successful?
I don't think so..
The Smartphone is a relatively new form-factor and it wasnt neccesarily better suited for calling,
But it made other things possible that the traditional mobile phone did not do very well.

I you think of a hybrid as a new form-factor then it makes a little more sense when you look at the speccs.

Well, i see what you mean there and speaking between 2 people no, nothing needs to match anything or beat anything.

However, put that little bastard called "market" and his evil cousin "target group" in the conversation and that is exactly when these things come into play. Whether we like it or not the Switch WILL BE PUT in the shelves next to the PS4 and XBone. This alone, created comparisons and naturally so. Everybody will judge what to buy based on a few different key reasons of getting one over the other. The problem nintendo is facing here is that they produced a console with shit hardware as a home console, which means no AAA from the well known studios (at least mostly), a price point that is pretty close or *exceeds* way more powerful and software supported home consoles and of course the lack of software itself (please do not bring up that graphic nintendo likes to toss around every now and then, people do not recognise more than 1/4 of them), when somebody is comparing their offering with somebody else's.

It is going to be a hard sell to the non fanatics. Paradoxically enough, it is exactly this target group nintendo needs to try to grab if they want to stay afloat, as their followers are following anyway. So, at the end of the day, in market speech, YES, they need to compare. And they need to compare good. People try to find value in anything they buy. As long as they find it in the Switch it will sell. If they do not, it won't.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

This just in: Comparing specs from device to device never has and never will resolve anything. Crazy, right?

Specs - not. Performance - yes. When performance is closely linked to specs (and not just by number crunching alone of course) then yes, we have good reasons for discussion.

I'm surprised at the amount of delusional people who actually thought that the Switch which is essentially a handheld with the ability to hook up to a TV, would have anywhere near as much power as the PS4 or Xbox One.

Just enjoy your god damn games and stop worrying so much about specs, if you truly wanted power you'd buy/build a Gaming PC.

The lie that people seem to skip entirely by not reading the thread and only looking for trigger words (like lie) was that the switch would be powered by a custom Tegra processor comparable to the top performing GeForce gaming graphics card. It's a stock model, and not exactly that powerful either. Everyone is bringing console comparisons into the fray, but the now undeniable fact is the Switch is nowhere near as powerful as the current consoles, which means there will likely be less third party support. That's a bit worrisome for me, as one of the reasons I got the Switch was to play Skyrim on the go. Long car trip? Let's quicksave and kill everyone in Whiterun.

Considering the sheer amount of criticisms (not hate, but legitimate criticisms), it makes me think that Nintendo should take the SEGA route and just become a game developer/publisher. I'd love to play a Legend of Zelda/Metroid/Fire Emblem game on the ps4/pc.

This exact quote is the lie that got me somewhat hyped up:
"Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards."

I still like the switch, but i can't really defend it against the legitimate criticisms.

That is precisely what i brought up pages ago on this thread because they quoted me saying i am FAKE NEWS.

Take your non custom, standard X1 now. Nintendo has obviously been misleading people. By aligning with Nvidia and using corporate speech, they make people think this is going to be a powerhouse (lol) while they actually just commissioned a standard chip, which is the cheapest of them all.

It is like promising your brother a Ferrari for his birthday, only to come home with an RC model of one.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

There isn't a single console maker who has learned that lesson, but they also don't want to charge $700+ for modern hardware. I posted a video in this same thread showing a GTX 680 outclassing PS4. A fucking GTX 680. C'est la vie.

The difference is a console is a package. Not simply a graphics card. To put it another way. Put that GTX 680 in a dual core celeron and let me know what you can play. A console needs other components, so to bring the cost to an acceptable level (historically speaking consoles that cost too much just failed) they have to use less than stellar components. This is known. It is within those boundaries that the switch is considered less powerful to compete (as in, less powerful for devs to port their games).

According to nintendo, it's a console that can be disconnected and used as a handheld. "Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system first and foremost", or so they've told Polygon. Mind you, I consider it a handheld myself, but the home console aspect is apparently what they are trying to emphasize.

Also, some of the people worrying about specs are actually worried about the future of the switch. I would consider myself as one of those people. I don't want to see Nintendo fail, but lack of third party support is a disheartening start to the system, especially when you can clearly see it just by looking at the game lineup for the switch on the future. You can only go so far relying entirely on 1st party games, but right now it's their only choice. Nintendo really needs to go all out on the switch. Like, a complete focus on getting out great first party games.

But it proved that power isn't everything.
DS vs PSP
3DS vs Vita
PS2 vs Xbox

In those battles, the weaker hardware always won because of the software, not the specs.

Proof that hardware doesn't save a console if the library and marketing are shit

Yes, this line of thinking was working, *back then*, when all consoles had their own architecture and devs had to choose which one to support. Now, everything is pretty much in a single architecture, but the switch. Which means that devs can develop on one architecture for PC, PS4 and XBone, and not even blink an eye. Bringing games to the Switch will mean a proper port. So the tables have turned. Nowadays it is architecture, neither power, nor anything else that will bring the games. There is a reason why everybody has almost gone multiplat nowadays. I remember lots more exclusives back in the day. Now, apart for a handful of games (maybe not even that) everything else is multiplat.

@Online It's all good, I just hope you accept that this is my opinion and for me personally until 2016 was over PS4 was quite a letdown (Its getting good now), and I really don't have any complaints on the Wii U library, just wish Nintendo had delivered a Metroid game on it. Cheers.

Because they are spoilt and have to whine about something. If it wasn't performance specs, it would be something else to cry about.

I think some are worried about on how 3rd party devs would take the specs, since Nintendo promised more 3rd party games. As much as graphics does not matter, a little more power might be appeasing for much more complex task for developers.

I see a lot complaining about this CPU but how does anyone here actually know these shots are taken from a Nintendo Switch and are legit and maybe not actually from a Nvidia Shield to troll etc..??? these sorts of sites you cannot trust! I would not put anything too bed until I had actually heard it from the horses mouth! The shots from the sites don't actually show the Nintendo Switch board with the CPU in, it just shows the Nvidia chip??? that could be anything. Has anyone here done a personal teardown of the Switch yet, no! so how does anyone actually know there real! All I see is pictures, nothing confirmed from the actual system, nothing is labeled Nintendo Co.etc..

Another thing that does bug me, how the F**K does this site know what power the chip is giving out they can't bench test it! How do they know its not modified for the system.

The switch can still make for a damn fun console. It comes down to 3rd party support. Ppl can claim they dont want the usual AAA titles like assassins creed, cod etc. But without those AAA cookie cutter ports, it will fail. Maybe not as bad as wiiu, but it will. If nintendo wants to compete with the big boys, they need hardware that runs the same games that the big boys do. Zelda, Mario and Splatoon can only cary a system so far. The alternative would be to crank out a steady flow of new games. And I mean steady. Like a new Zelda every 2-3 years, Metroid etc. Without 3rd party AAA or a large amount of 1st pa0rty titles, it will die for sure. This was my thinking even before this "news" reveal. As a side note, i wonder if bethesda will even be able to get that skyrim port running smoothly enough for release? Ppl will say that game doesn't matter either, but countless ppl would love a portable skyrim or fallout 4. I feel like this is Nintendo's last ditch effort to regain viability in the home console market, so I do hope it succeeds. I just don't have much faith left.

First off techinsights is very reliable reputable site, they have done the dye scans and its closely resembles Tegra X1, exactly the same infact.
Secondly, the clockspeeds I've reported are from a Eurogamer who have a reputable source who have leaked everything correctly about the Switch beforehand and clockspeeds are very believable, if the clockspeeds are any higher you will see throttling in X1 and it won't be a good sight, seeing your game suddenly performing shit out of nowhere.

As for teardown, go to youtube and you will see the same chip names on the outside as reported here

No please, I want third party support, but not that shit.
Like in the past, good AAA original games.
Third party support is required for it to go on, but not photocopied games. Having exclussive original third party games developed for it has way more appeal that getting a boring multiplat that will run worse than in other console one already owns.

Techinsights is a business, so any false doing is likely to hamper their trust with the work they do and damage their reputation. Unless you have your own business and you have an interest in competitors products, I doubt you have any interest or come across them.
