TBH it doesn't really matter since even Pro and Scorpio will be best played in 1080p60. That's a much bigger upgrade over PS4/XB1 than "upscaled" 4K, which isn't really 4K at all. At their respective prices, especially taking accessories/game prices into account, you'd get so much more value out of building a PC.

Microsoft says Scorpio will render games 4K natively.

I think the Switch isn't comparable with PS4 and X1 for the main fact it's a handheld. It may work like a home console, but looking at it's core, it's specs, architecture, everything, it's undeniable it's a handheld. Although Switch specs haven't been released, it can be said it is really strong for a handheld and is a huge step over 3DS

And they can get away with saying that because we know how many 2D/2.5D games are out there which it will render at 4K natively. It just won't make much visible difference.

It's a hybrid that's in the same performance range as XB1. Hell, Nvidia/Nintendo could have made it bigger, more costly, and outperformed XB1 if they had wanted, but that wouldn't have been too wise with the current outlook in the gaming industry. What's most important is that it supports the newest engines and a range of APIs, making it as easy to develop for as PC in many cases.

I'd note that XB1 runs a lot of open world games at 900p. IMO you'd have to be crazy not to be blown away by that BotW trailer regardless. This is a game world twice the overall size of Skyrim's.

In terms of art direction, BotW is impressive. Technically, BotW is very unimpressive. It runs at 900p, 30fps (most of the time), geometry and LoD pop in is a little aggressive, and texture filtering is quite bad. Watch a clip where Link runs on some type of texture that isn't grass. 0 to 10 feet is blurry. Over 10 feet is Vasoline-O-Vision. I can't wait to play the game. However, I wish it didn't have to be rendered on a potato.

Well, there's nothing stopping Nintendo from releasing a home version only Switch, or portable only Switch for that matter later on. If they do so, I think a home version is most likely since they want to hold on to the 3ds, just a bit longer.

I would still pick the Switch version myself, tho.

It's an Nvidia-created hybrid console with Nintendo games and a better outlook for third-party support. It utilizes multiple APIs, and it's a vastly superior portable compared to 3DS graphically.

The Switch is a vastly inferior portable to the 3DS volumetrically.

We've already seen several different versions of the game running and they look better as they get newer, as is to be expected. I seriously doubt they're done polishing it visually, and all we've ever seen it through is compressed video streams anyway. XB1 and PS4 look equally garbage when recording games being played on another screen.

I have no idea what you're trying to mean here. Minus the attached joy cons, Switch is only a little larger than half of 3DS XL.

There is one thing stopping them... Pride. I can't see Nintendo compromising their "vision." Even if it tanks.

Let's hope they still have some polishing and optimization to do. I would think that the demo that was playable Jan 14th was pretty close to the final build. Seeing uncompressed capture would make the texture filtering issues more apparent. Video compression is not the cause of the very noticeable and immediate falloff in texture clarity that I was talking about.

The Switch would be closer to being pocketable without the Joy Cons but you kinda need the Joy Cons to play.

Personally the size and battery life are fine for what I'm going to use the portable feature for. I don't see myself taking a shit that lasts over two and a half hours.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

3ds 3ds XL 2DS N3DS XL ... PS4 PS4 Slim Ps4 Pro etc...

Doesn't have to tank, to do "non-vision" versions.

Perhaps. All the 3DS variants aren't really good examples because it they didn't really change any fundamental aspects of the console. The 2DS is a damn good point though. It's a revision the completely removed the 3DS's unique feature. Maybe if they find that enough people don't take the Switch any further than the toilet they would make a console only version. Of course if they made it more powerful that would mean that games would have to have three different performance profiles. Prolly not that big of a deal but something to consider.

Well yeah, that's what I mean. Post-process effects haven't been applied fully yet, and Switch should be capable of at least FXAA. Also worth noting that BotW is still a "port" from Wii U in the sense that it wasn't built from the ground-up for Switch.

Nintendo looks firmly set with how the Switch is so chances of a "home console" version is just very unlikely. Ninty never re-released WiiU as a slimmer model or anything even though many expected it to, so that the price would be lower.

I think they should have kept it as a regular D-Pad, even if it would feel a bit weird to use it as 4 buttons.
That would feel really weird using a Dpad as abxy buttons. Maybe someone will make a magnetic dpad like the xbox elite controller. So you would be able to swap from D-pad to buttons easily.

Yea same here. But also something some people wouldnt think about. What about power outage. With the switch you can continue to play your game vs any other system. I remember playing destiny and the power went out for 10mins. messed up my game big time.

LOL. You make it sound like a gaming laptop.

That was meant to have two usable controllers equally rather than what they did with the Wiimote + Nunchuk. It's a terrible "d-pad" if you can call it that.

Personally as long as they're comfortable to use, and we have an alternative (which is the Pro Controller), I don't mind the 4 buttons as a d-pad.
It's not just the "d-pad" that's a problem but the analogue stick on it too. As for how comfortable, well, that's for one to decide when he/she tries it out. For me it's anything but comfortable.
