At the time of its release it is technically the 3rd game in the series making it #3. Is the DS or Wii game non canon or something or did Nintendo miscount and/or memory relapse.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
isn't a part of the DS series count because the "Wii" in the title makes it a different series I guess.
