Gaming It just occurred to me, why is it called New Super Mario Bros 2?

At the time of its release it is technically the 3rd game in the series making it #3. Is the DS or Wii game non canon or something or did Nintendo miscount and/or memory relapse.

Because it's the second handheld New Mario game I'm guessing

is a sequel to
New Super Mario Bros.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
isn't a part of the DS series count because the "Wii" in the title makes it a different series I guess.

Same with
New Super Mario Bros. U
