So no update on the patch yet (I'm still working on tweaking it and getting it to correctly run), but I wanted to point out something weird in the patches.

In the original R/B/Y VC patches, for some reason, patch [Network_RESET] points to an address within a routine that checks and works with the Super Gameboy. Considering this routine is most likely never ran while Pokemon is being played on Virtual Console, it begs the question as to why it was patched in the first place.

What is EVEN WEIRDER is that the routine in Yellow to transfer data to the SGB is vastly different from the one in Red and Blue, yet the patch still points to an address in it. This confirms that it wasn't an error on Nintendo's part, which makes it even more confusing.

So is that like working with config files in Wii U VC N64? They're pretty much similar, except this involves patches instead of config.

Best of luck with this. Forgive me if this has been asked, but if you're successful in getting gen 2 titles to communicate with each other wirelessly like RBY, would the gen 2 titles, GSC be able to communicate wirelessly with the official gen 1 titles like you could with the actual games, or does the communication work a little differently to not allow that.

No one knows FOR SURE, but my theory is that somewhere in the code, for some reason, palette lines 5 and 6 are being purposefully cleared. Pokemon Yellow never uses those lines, so it doesn't affect it at all.

Maybe it has something to do with the Jynx colorization? Who knows. (What I'm talking about is that Jynx uses more colors on its palette than normal in the VC version of Pokemon Yellow)

I just want to clarify, so you guys are aware~

The reason right now that we're testing around and doing things is because that, though the patch is very close to being done, Crystal is having problems connecting to another copy of Crystal. Linking up with Red, Blue, or Yellow (and even Green, IIRC) works just fine. It's just getting the game to connect to another copy of Crystal that's being a bit of a bugger.

Take your time! It's awesome to see that it's even working between Red/Blue/Yellow and Crystal!

I assume that issue also happens between two copies of Gold too? Or just Crystal to Crystal?

To be clear though, the patch has not been ported to Gold or Silver yet. It's just very safe to assume that, since Crystal is based on Gold and Silver, that Gold and Silver would have the same problems.

does the timecapsle work for trading to a legit purchased pokemon red blue or yellow on a non hacked 3ds
can a game bot color rom work in a gameboy vc

I think yes and sort of. A game like Pokemon Crystal will certainly work in a normal VC game, but in the case of these specific VC titles, some of the palette (specifically the browns) and obviously the link cable features by default (which are being worked on as we speak) do not work. Otherwise though, it seems that more or less the games will work and if I'm not mistaken, can be traded to regular legit-bought VC titles.

Hacking a 3DS on legit bought VC Pokemon title doesn't really equate into the first question.

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
