On that thought you should try Game Maker. Maybe you should pick that up, since you can virtually do everything that RPG Maker can do.
All I have to work with though is a college computer that runs on Windows 7. Needless to say, I don't have adequate video drivers for Game Maker.

Nope... You signed an NDA. As soon as you signed that NDA you said that you won't release any homebrew using Nintendo information, so as soon as you signed into the dev portal you shrekt your chance
Oh well, I wasn't gonna make any homebrew anyways. Hell if I care!

YEAAAAH! IT'S THE INTERNET! WE DO WHAT WE WANT! Besides, Nintendo wouldn't really go out of their way to look for every single person signed up on their program who has either made or is working on homebrew. Right?

Who knows? Better not test your luck, though. I heard Reggie Fils-Aime can shoot lasers out of his eyes. ACK!!! Here he comes!

Do what you want, then if you are sued, it will be your fault, if you signed the NDA you have to do what it says

I signed up because I my self actually planned on making a rhythm game for the Wii U haha. Ofc just for learning purposes as it will be a clone of another game i adore. However with that said Nintendo must of known this would be coming (if people do leak the sdks) i am sure they wouldn't take back what they gave us devs as a blessing just because a few idiots decided to leak the sdk. If anything they would try to go only after them.

Nintendo has become the new Google Play Store now, which is so saddening!
You say that like Nintendo doesn't still have a review process for the eShop. They aren't going to blindly accept anything that gets submitted; no twelve dozen flappy bird clones here.

You can probably use a leaked DEV firmware on a a9lh 3ds
I know how to test dev games on retail firmware, that's not the issue. It's how closely nintendo checks what hardware you have.

I'd love to know how this made it past the review process.

And until you shell out the cash for the Dev kit to get a proper build, your game is NEVER going to see the light of day. What does it take to get a DEV kit even if you have the cash? Everything you mentioned. That dev kit with its software is CLOSELY monitored by Nintendo. They give zero fucks about who is a "Nintendo game developer" according to their site. Once you actually get the devkit hardware, then and ONLY then are you a certified Nintendo Developer. Go ahead and sign up! Don't listen to OP.

SOURCE: Shipped 4 Nintendo game products.

They shelled out the cash and passed the interview process to license a dev kit.

I would also like a more concrete answer on what hardware nintendo requires we have. I'm trying to learn unity with the hopes of making a full metroidvania title for 3ds eshop. If it turns out we really do need a $2000 system I might try a crowd fund after I have a fully working game to show off asking for money to "test it on 3ds" for a release.
A fully realized working build will help your kickstarter 100% People are more likely to fund a finished game in need of final compliance hardware then some ramblings in a notebook and a "level" farted together in unreal.

Actually, Nintendo has stuff put in place for indie devs that allow them to send the coded game back to nintendo to run through a catdev unit. Big problem with that is nintendo puts it out as a first party title you are on it as programmer. It also gets to be a huge pain when there are bugs to be fixed prior to release as you dont physically get to see them.
Also, nintendo has nice payment plans on the cat dev.
And if all you are doing is releasing free games they will give you one to use. There are many hoops to jump through to get one for free. But as far as assistance goes Ive never seen anyone as helpful as nintendo.
We had trouble with some stuff once and nintendo actually wrote the code to fix our problem. Yes to be a nintendo developer you really should buy a cat dev but they are really easy going on repayment.
I totally agree for a working model for kickstarter.
For us we build a functional game on pc and port to wii u.
This would probably be the best way for kickstarter as well so you have videos to show of the game running. Or at least some real good stills from your unity project.

Also, there is a special unity engine that is coded for wii u that makes the process pretty seemless for indie devs to release without a catdev unit

Hu, you make a good point. Knowing that, I guess I was wrong. I'll put what you said in the main post.

does this mean you can still develop 3ds homebrew as long as it doesn't use info you got from the SDK?

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
