VC/ESHOP CIA files work region free with Luma3DS? Is there a special process for installing VC/DSi CIA's?

So the region/language emulation on Luma works, and with PKHex, I can edit region and language to whatever I want. However, I still come up with the country and subregion on my console's settings, in this case: United States and Pennsylvania respectively. Is there a way to prevent that from appearing? Without having to make a different region emunand.

Following Plailect's guide. This is the third 3DS I am doing this to. Following it to the 't', as per usual. Part 3. Created RedNAND, copied all files back to SD card. Load up HomeBrew via menuhax. Select Luma3DS (5.4). Black screens. I tried 5.3.1, same result. First time this has happened. Does anybody know what's up or what I can do? I literally did one last night and was perfectly fine. TY!

Just keep trying, that's the issue with launching it with *hax stuff it can fail (same with any cfw)

(toshiba n3dsxl sysnand, rednand setup)? I'm just curious. I know the other way works, I just wasn't sure about this way. Thanks!

Should be as the extra space is just blank padding. If it doesn't work its just an emunand that you can flash a backup to. So backup ur emunand and give it a shot.

Question is, my 3ds is currently on original stock 2.1.0 firmware with browser installed. Can I backup my otp first using the same method in the guide? Or will I still have to upgrade to 4.x, then to 9.2, follow guide and then downgrade back to 2.1 when it asks? I wasn't sure if you had to have the modded rednand before the url loading for otp backup would work?

Dump your OTP now! Then update using a cartridge to 9.2 or a firmware greater than 4.x.

Nope if you are on 2.1 you can just grab the otp and then upgrade. No need to go to a higher fw and then downgrade

I'm trying to understand what steps I need to do.

My goal is to play backups, which I believe need to be converted to cia files so that they get installed on the eminent.

From my understanding so far a9lh is the way to go, I can have that installed through cube ninja (cubehax).

Then I need the OTP thing, which I still can't figure out what it is (anyone can clarify).

Afterwards I need to settle on which cfw to use between ReiNand and AuReiNand.

Does that make any sense? Am I completely off track?

What's the difference between the 2 cfw listed above?

Is there an up to date guide I can follow? I can't seem to find one with the new hacking methods.

The former has some additional features compared to the latter which you read in its official thread.

Follow this guide to get Arm9loaderhax set up. You can use Cubic Ninja to set it up, but you don't need to; you can use the browser instead.

OTP is the One-Time Pad. It is a region of data that is believed to hold the 3DS's console-unique keys. This is used to decrypt some data on the 3DS and allow you to exploit part of the FIRM partition of the 3DS's NAND. This causes the exploit to be launched before sysNAND is loaded, giving you a 100% CFW bootrate and the ability to restore from bricks without a hardmod.

Cakes is also an option for CFW and also what I personally use. It's ultimately up to you on what to use.

ReiNAND is a fairly old CFW developed by Reisyukaku. It was originally an N3DS only CFW and was the first CFW to bypass(?) the N3DS's new encryption keys. AuReiNAND (now Luma) is a modified version of ReiNAND made to work with the O3DS (ReiNAND can now support the O3DS as well; it couldn't at the time AuReiNAND was created though) made by Aurora Wright. ReiNAND is quite simple and easy to use, while Luma has a lot more configuration options. It'd probably be easier to look at the GitHub/GBAtemp pages for each CFW to read about their features.

no, actually the best method would be to stay on 9.2 sysnand, then set up an Emu/RedNAND and custom firmware. you can install games in .cia format and not have to deal with private headers at all.

If you are planning on setting up CFW, there's no need for private headers. You can install the games as .cias, which use the 3DS's console header instead (they don't require private headers).

This guide covers everything from downgrading to setting up A9lh and CFW. I recommend following it.

I assume you already know, but you can install Cubic Ninja on the Sky3DS+ and use it for Ninjhax. Unfortunately, beyond that the Sky3DS+ won't be of much use since CFW can do everything it can and a lot more. If you really want to use it after getting CFW though, then yes the Gateway method will work for extracting private headers.
