The only thing I don't get is why alibaba INVESTS that sort of money into ouya. Compared to the ouya's capital, I would think they could just take over the company.

But otherwise, it's not as stupid as an idea as many seem to make it out to be. Have you guys even read the article?

The two companies have discussed a plan to incorporate Ouya’s software and library of more than 1,000 games into Alibaba’s set-top box

The investment could help Ouya find new life in China, a market where gaming is primed for growth

Partnering with Ouya to expand its library of games could help Alibaba get its devices into more Chinese homes, where it can sell digital content and get more visitors to its online store.

Yeah...in the US and Europe, everyone's already stacking up the television consoles, and in the low-end segment, amazon's fire TV is tough competition. It's a whole different ball game in China. The console ban has just been lifted and the population isn't used to spending huge amounts of cash on consoles or games. A cheap console with many games is a much safer bet. So I'd think twice before laughing at how stupid alibaba's doing...it's not even unlikely they'll make a profit of this.

Large companies tend to invest in smaller companies, in lieu of buying them, as investments offer decent returns (stocks/shares in a company, plus the ability to steer a company in a particular direction) without the liability of that smaller company going bust. Take a look at Apple and their sapphire display debacle. Typically a portion of budget will be set aside, by companies like Microsoft, to invest in startups and SMEs that interest them.

While thinking like that might make your purchase in an OUYA feel better, I'm afraid not everyone shares the same feelings.

I don't need to "feel better" about my OUYA. I spent 104 on it and got more than my money's worth. I don't give two shits about ultra high end graphics. I like seeing consoles pushed within their means. The OUYA is a fine product and in some technical ways, better than Wii. Granted the two are neck and neck IMO. Now if you excuse me, I'll go back to enjoying Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath on my OUYA. :)

Neither are your feelings of it being an abomination.

*sigh* I'm not a fan of the ouya in any means, but this console bashing (or rather: the bashing of everyone who happen to like it) is really getting old.

i'll enjoy it on my nexus 10...which i downloaded for free :creep:

lol I see what you did there :P I could have simply installed the Google Play or amazon version of said game to my OUYA but I have a standing policy to always buy the OUYA version of a game first before resorting to installing other versions. It's similar to my policy of always buying the Nintendo version of a AAA game first before resorting to OnLive or Playcast.

You've made the assumption that I don't like the OUYA because it's not a high end machine.

OUYA is a failure because of a number of things. They hyped up an original gaming machine with exclusives, yet they can probably only name 2. Let's not mention the long draught OUYA had when it released (and is still having now). Pretty much any phone released in the past two years is far superior than the OUYA, what's the point in spending $99 when you've already got what you need in your hand? For $99 you could get a Playstation TV and experience something new.

OUYA's critical flaw is, as prowler mentioned, running a mobile OS. There is no point in buying a device with virtually the same games your phone can handle anyways, and on the go at that. It should've been a proper Linux box with shortened API's, as it is, it's a tablet without a screen.

The ouya is more powerful than you could imagine! The tegra 3 gpu is better than a mali and adreno gpus (90% of the mobile devices have these)... And this is why the ouya have a "closed" game store! Because they want excluve games with exclusive graphics using the features of the nvidia tegra 3! You should watch the dead trigger demo showing tegra 3 vs non tegra!

I belive the ouya isn't dead! Its alive and they have a great future!

You would totally have a point if not for the fact that there are Tegra-based Android devices out there and Nvidia distributes games enhanced for Tegra chipsets on TegraZone. The OUYA doesn't have advantages in this regard, in fact, it's held back. Most mobile games are designed with a touchscreen in mind, so ports always suffer to some extent, ports being the majority of OUYA's library.

Unfortunaly i think not :S Most of the Ouya users want the Minecraft Pocket edition port! The crossy road port (i made a hack to be able to play with the controller ) !

And i can show you the proof! Per example: Amazing Frog, Mousecraft, towerfall, meltdown, Shadowgun... They where designed for android gaming consoles (NON TOUCH DEVICES) and with the google TV thing more games will come for the android gaming boxes only! And we have some examples: Portal and Half life has been a exclusive for Nvidia Shield devices!

This kind of android gaming boxes is the future! Why? They are cheap... and great for casual or mid gamers! (and for the people who want to use emulators... cof cof)
