Any game will work. Doesn't necessary have to be online capable.

Thanks for the reply. I'm guessing that using an online capable header would be less likely to get banned, would it not?

Also, i think i'll just go ahead and buy Smash either way, since it's pretty much the only game i'm really interested in playing online with.

So you're saying that Smash Bros requires a different header code than everything else? I mean Im able to patch just about any game and they work flawless. Do I really have to try something different to make Smash Work online?
And the code "45F80090" is the one that worked for you?
Shouldn't any F8 and 90 header work? Or do the Manufacturer and unknown numbers make a difference?

I guess my chip is different from most 3ds devices here. I need to use the 45 chip code, else it won't work at all. This is for all my games, not just smash. As for the unknown code. i have no idea what they do. I only know when i used the 02 code it did connect me to the nintendo network, but when i tried matchmaking i got an error code. Oh btw, i'm not saying smash bros requires a different header code at all. All my games use the 45-xx-00-90 code (except for pokemon since it uses the 98 code). The xx is just the card size, so in this case the F8 is a 2gb card. So if the C9 chip code works for your other games the smash code should be C9F80090 (or 02 if that doesn't work, dunno what it does).

Wait, so what's the benefits of NOT letting the patcher auto fix the header?

There's really no benefits, I just like using one sized header for all my games. Rather than having rom patcher use different rom sized headers. But I was told that the rom size didn't matter when backing up saves with the header.

I have one question. When i dump my Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS and change the header, can nintendo also see that the games are the same dump? I want to play online with my friend at the same time, but i am afraid of getting banned. Hope for quick answer :)

Why are you afraid? Nobody has been banned, if you use this method through GateWay then you have the exact same chance of getting banned as everyone else who's using it, I'm not Nintendo so I've no idea what they can do or see and I doubt anybody here does, It would all be speculation. Nobody has been banned yet. If you're to scared to do it then don't otherwise go ahead.

The first line is the unique ID of the card, for now don't edit it. You can insert any unique ID into and rom. The second line is the Card ID, this is the one you can change. Below is an explanation of what each hex number means.

1. Manufacturer (0x1240)
45 = SanDisk
AE = OKI Semiconductor
C2 = Macronix

2. Size (0x1241)
7F = 128mb
FF = 256mb
FE = 512mb
FA = 1gb
F8 = 2gb
F0 = 4gb

3. Unknown (0x1242)
00 =
02 =

4. Card Type (0x1243)
90 = card1
98 = card2

You can use my program to edit the header of your roms. Here is the Link.
I dont understand what i should change now. Can somebody pls explain a bit more? :/

What I did was change to card 1 and make the size 4gb. It should just universally work. If you look at the picture you'll notice the 1 2 3 4 squeezed in there. Those correspond to the descriptions. So change 2 and 4.

Okay, i understand the most things now. I injected a 4gb Luigis Mansion header in my SSB rom. But should the manufactor match with the original SSB? The manufactor of Luigis Mansion SanDisk and the one from SSB is Macronix. Are there any problems if the new header of my SSB rom is SanDisk?

Working with headers is easy as pie now adays. Gateway rom patcher does all the work for you. So all you need to do is dump your game, dump the header from it.
Then load your Smash Bros rom in rom patcher, inject the header from your game, and it will ask you if you want the program to fix the header for you, choose yes. This part does all the work for you so that you won't need a hex editor to edit it yourself.
Now rename the game to .3DZ and you're done.
You can use ANY 3DS game that you own, for it's header. It's that simple thanks to the newer rom patcher!

I have the scene dump of a game but plan to buy it later. it's currently not available to me for another week or so. My question is, if I set it up to play online and progress and such as normal, can I keep my progression when my game arrives? What would be the best way to approach that time as well? Like, should I make a backup of my original cart and just replace it with the scene dump? Or can I just change the header of the scene dump with my header from my original cartridge once it arrives?

You can't transfer a Gateway save to a cartridge, since the header from the rom is not the same as the header from the cartridge.
You can dump the game yourself, and have it both on Gateway and in physical form. Then You can dump the save , from the Gateway menu.

You should wait til you get the game, then you can play the cartridge itself in Classic mode.

Right, I understand saves can't transfer to the cart. There's no reason to use classic mode if I can make a backup and play it from an SD card right? So that's what I was getting at. Since I don't have any experience with this. If I do whatever the guide says to get a header now, and then later use the header of my own personal cartridge, will that screw with my save data/online data? Specifically talking about Smash Bros. The reason I'm not interested in using classic mode is because it's so much easier to have my games on an microSD card rather than carry individual cards around.

Now about dumping a save. So if I have the cart and then make a backup of that cart, is the save still able to go back and forth (gatewaymode and classic mode) since they would be the same header? Is that what you meant by wait until I have the physical form and dump the save?

Yep you can use your own dumped game on Gateway, along with the save. If you start now on a scene rom, you will have to stick with this save. I'd say just buy it (If you wish to support Nintendo), but continue using the scene rom and save. Especially if you want to start now. You can backup the .sav file to a site like Dropbox along with the header you used. That will ensure that you'll never lose access to your Smash save file.

Your other choice will be to wait for the game, dump it, rename to .3DZ and put on your micro SD and done. But then the cartridge will become useless. Just know that it's possible to transfer the save BACK to the cartridge, and vice versa.

I can see why you wouldn't prefer classic mode, it's a pain to use since you need the gateway card inserted to boot into classic.
And yes the save made from classic will work with gateway mode, being the same header.
Just think as the scene rom as it's own cartridge, different from the one you're gonna buy, each tied to their own save file.

It's really easy to add a header to the scene rom, just dump your own header from ANY game of yours, use Gateway Rom Patcher, and apply it to the scene rom. Allowing the program to fix the header for you when it prompts you. Rename to .3dz and you're done.

I personally use my very own header from Mario Kart 7, a game I won't sell or give away. I use this same header with all my Gateway online games, works every time.

just to clarify something. If I use the same header with 2 different games, my save wont work?
Let me explain:
I dumped my Madden football header
Use that header with scene dump of pokemon x and y both
but since I am using the same header, they will create same save file?
Or is it ok to use same header with different games?

Saves won't be over written or clash? I thought save is tied to header so wouldn't using same header create and use same file?
Just confirming :) I can buy hundreds of madden football carts if needed. They cost 1 pound a cart lol
Is that for real? I can actually just buy ONE obscure copy of some obscure offline game and use its header online?! Has anyone tried this?
