I just received my GW and am completely lost. I had no issues backing up my NAND or formatting EMUNAND. Then I tried to actually use the red card. I get "nothing's inserted in the card slot" every time no matter what .3ds file I try.

I tried the GWtestrom.3ds from GW's site and same result. Tried two different SD cards with different sizes and manufacturers. Then I tried reformatting them even though they were already FAT32. Same result.

In case this is a clue, I did the diagnostics on the GW and got green OK!s all the way down until the SD Test. It failed in RED.

Everything else went so smooth that I must be doing something wrong. What am I missing?

I know this isn't on the topic of the 3DS or Gateway but does the concept of EMUNAND apply for other consoles as well? For example, for the PS3 instead of taking a risk by going online using CFW, is there a way to use EMUNAND to switch between OFW and CFW?

I'm guessing by the architecture of the PS3 that it isn't possible so I would like this to be cleared up

Thanks!

Googling "PS3 dual nand" comes up with solderless options if you're interested.

I would assume since it hasn't been possible with USB devices yet, it's probably not possible. It probably has to boot from a NAND bank otherwise the bootup fails.

Can I swap EmuNand? Have one SD with 6.xx and another with 7.xx? Will Pokemon's save file be corrupted if I try this?

If you tried different MicroSD cards, then it almost sounds like a faulty Gateway if the Diagnostic Test is failing on that.

You need to already have one with 6.xx as you can't download that update anymore but yes, you could do that.

Pokemon corruption no idea. There's no harm in trying as the save isn't actually corrupt, the keys just don't match.

This might sound stupid, but does it still work too play pokemon "offline" and then later just use another updated 3ds too play online?
If you play a retail Pokémon cartridge on Gateway's Classic Mode, then you can play it offline, yes.
However, you cannot use it on an updated 3DS after you've used it on Gateway's Classic Mode. It has to do with the save encryption. It's handled differently on an updated 3DS...

Zelda is using the new Save encryption method, therefore if you play that game on EmuNAND Classic it will not use the same encryption than RealNAND6.0.0+, and you will loose your progress. (same problem is yuo start playing on Real NAND and later put it on EmuNAND Classic).

That sucks. Does this issue apply to older games like Mario kart 7 and if not from which game did they start using the new encryption?

Pokemon corruption no idea. There's no harm in trying as the save isn't actually corrupt, the keys just don't match.

So if save corruption is from keys no longer matching why does this happen? Every 3ds has a unique NAND id and I'm guessing keys are tied to that. Is gateway replacing the unique id with a dummy when creating the emunand so that saves can be shared or something? Have they commented on this issue and if they plan to fix it?

I would much prefer to have my cart saves work correctly. I would imagine eshop content would also work correctly if this was fixed instead of getting deleted. Maybe online with roms too....

Not sure if this has been asked before. Here is my situation:

- Just received the 3DSLink from Eachmall (I know it's a clone and doesn't support EmuNAND well. But that's another topic).
- My kid has been playing Animal Crossing retail cartridge for a while and she doesn't want her saves be messed up.
- I plan to play some ROMs using old 3DSLink (2.0?) which is much stable.

My question is:
1. Is it true that once 3DS is hacked, it can't play retail cartridge any more?
2. To play retail cartridge, do I have to restart 3DS to reset the system (disable hacking)?
3. Will the Animal Crossing game save be messed up if I try to play the retail cartridge in hacked mode?
4. Let's say in the future I start using EmuNAND (with either 3DSLink or GW) to play Animal Crossing, will it start a new game or it will continue with the existing game save?

Thx!

OK I've got some pretty basic noob questions that I couldn't really find conclusive answers for:

1. In the past couple of months I've purchased both the Gateway cart for 3DS game emulation and the Supercard DSTWO for GBA, SNES, and other older console emulation since I read at the time that the Gateway doesn't handle those too well. I'm assuming it's impossible to run the firmwares of both of those carts simultaneously on my 3DS, so how would I go about switching from, say, the Gateway firmware to the Supercard firmware once I want to play GBA games? Is it as simple as just installing the second firmware "over" the first firmware as if I was installing firmware for the first time, or do I first have to remove the first firmware?

2. I haven't updated my 3DS since I got it (on 4.5 I believe) and I'm currently running pre-2.0 Gateway firmware (whatever was available about two months ago). In order to play newer 3DS games (anything over 4.5 I guess) from the Gateway cart, I don't have to actually update my 3DS, just the Gateway firmware, right?

3. I seem to have misplaced my blue Gateway cartridge, is it true that I can use the Supercard DSTWO to update my Gateway firmware? I still have my red cartridge which I've been using to play older 3DS games but it would kinda suck if I wasn't able to update the Gateway firmware at all lol.

4. If I ever want to play Pokemon or Animal Crossing, can I still use emuNAND to update my 3DS since I've already installed firmware on it or am I screwed on that front?

Thanks in advance.

My 3DS is currently on v5.1.0-11U (it came with an earlier firmware, but if I remember correctly, I updated to my current firmware to play Luigi's Mansion: DM). If the physical hardware of my 3DS matters I can provide more information. Do any of the flashcarts that play 3DS roms support my current firmware? If not, is there a specific game I can buy to update it to a supported firmware and/or are there firmware updates planned for one or more of the 3DS-rom-playing flash carts capable of supporting my 3DS's firmware?

I would sell it to get one on 4.5 because I doubt it'll ever work above 4.5 just like the ps3 and 3.55

Don't really understand what you're talking about. But if you want to use SCDS2, exit GW mode (restart 3DS).

You're too late. It's not recommended atm.

Just to elaborate on my first question, I'm wondering if the gw and scds2 firmwares conflict. In other words, can I use the scds2 even while I have the gw firmware installed on my 3ds?

Thanks for clarifying the other issues.

edit: actually nvm you p much already answered that question, in the part of your post I quoted even! This is why reading comprehension is important!

I have a R4 Gold Deluxe and and R4 Gold 3DS RTS - sadly in my excitement to play the new Phoenix Wright game I updated my (c)2011 3DS XL to v7.0 which I believes stops me from running 3DS roms right?

Is there any recourse here? I'm new to all this :)

Is there a downgrade or a card that will allow me to play 3DS roms?

no matter what .3ds file I try.
Then I tried reformatting them even though they were already FAT32. Same result.
What am I missing?
FAT32 is NOT working.
Do not copy the .3ds file to the SD card using your explorer. Drag/drop or Copy/paste is not supported yet.

You need to "flash" the data to the card in raw format (the card will become unreadable on Windows).
Use Win32DiskImager to write the .3ds to the card.

Can I swap EmuNand? Have one SD with 6.xx and another with 7.xx? Will Pokemon's save file be corrupted if I try this?
The save will work. The save encryption method used by the console is the one from the System NAND : 4.5.0, no matter which EmuNAND version you have.
Though, remember that you can loose your save if you try that card on a real 6.0.0+ NAND, or if Gateway team change/find a way to use RealNAND key method in future Launcher.dat.

That sucks. Does this issue apply to older games like Mario kart 7 and if not from which game did they start using the new encryption?
They updated the save encryption method in their SDK6, all games bundled with System version 6.0.0+ are affected.
You can look at 3ds.essh.co website to get a list of affected games.
Old games are not affected.

Ok again this plays to noobness here, is a NAND backup like a version of the firmware we can upload to the 3DS and replace the one installed?
If so are these downloadable or are they unique to each system?
