I'm sure it's like the 3DS and the Vita where they have the exploit but they're not releasing anything yet until they can figure enough out about how the machine actually works to be able to actually WRITE any homebrew for it.

If they release it now, Nintendo will patch the whole in their source code faster than you can sneeze and say "bless you" but no one will even have had enough information to write a single app for it yet.

hey ppl. Just got a wii-u for xmas and i'm interested in homebrew. I'm a noob to this and just had a couple questions. I've already read the forums and wanted to clarify a couple things:
1 - If i dump my vWii's NAND and then brick my system then can i use the NAND dump to bring the v-wii back to life? It says i need a 'hardware programmer', are there any tutorials on how to do this myself easily?
2 - What is the best and safest USB loader? Does it cover all games?
3 - What video players are safe to install? I want to play avi, mp4, mkv, etc off a removable hard drive. What would be best? and what file formats does it support?
4 - Are downloaded games from eshop .wad files? Hypothetically - if i had mario world in a .wad file on my PC would that be safe to install?
5 - Is there a list of apps that are safe and compatible with my Wii-U's vWii? I couldn't find one online. Does the homebrew channel tell me whats safe to install?
thx everyone

1 - the "hardware programmer" is a person with special equipment to restore that kind of stuff. You can't do it yourself but if you didn't back it up first, there would be nothing for that person to use to restore.
2 - http://gbatemp.net/threads/backup-loaders.333364/
3 - WiiMC is the one that's kept most up to date ... and it can play almost ANYTHING (in my limited experience)
4 - Unfortunately, there's not a good list. Games are generally safe. Be careful with anything that makes permanent changes to your NAND (but that doesn't mean they're all unsafe either. just be CAREFUL and when in doubt, ASK.) http://gbatemp.net/threads/basic-dos-and-do-nots-of-vwii-modding.339337/
5 - generally, any game you'd get from the shop channel is safe.

1. There is no easy way to restore a dumped NAND yet since Bootmii can't be installed in boot2 on vWii yet. The best thing you can do is dump your vWii keys.
2. Usb Loader GX and Wiiflow work with the vWii.
3. Check Wiibrew.or for media players. Some formats won't play, but most do.
4. Wad files are only for the Wii / vWii currently. Nothing is available for Wii U eshop titles (yet):
5. Wiibrew.org will be your best bet for a complete list of compatible safe software for Wii. Homebrew Browser is a food app to get for downloading homebrew directly from your vWii

Hi,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this. Im kinda a noob at this and ive read guides on this website.

I have a Pal wii u and I installed the homebrew channel using the pal smash bros, smash stack. I wanted to play the ntsc version of the game using gecko os but whenever i try to load it, it says an error has occured.

Is it possible to play wii game from another region using gecko os on a pal wii u?

Thanks

Where did it say that someone dumped an ISO image? It would be nice to have a legit source you know.
I was looking for it but I can't find it anymore. Somebody had posted the .nfo file that supposedly comes along with the download but that's all I remember for sure and it could have been fake, too.

hey, Is there a homebrew video player for vwii that can stream video files directly from my PC over my home network like the 360 does? I know I can set up a server on my PC and play mp4 in the wii u internet browser although i did attempt it and it didn't work. Also with setting up the PC server for the browser mp4 stream does that mean anyone over the internet can access my PC or is it only for my home network?
BTW I'm going out to buy a copy of lego indiana jones today. I'll tell everyone how it goes.

We don't know yet what will happen, as Nintendo didn't provide any update since HBC release.
If it's like the Wii, they will update the system menu to detect and delete the HBC and replace cIOS with stub IOS.

As forcing an update of the WiiU with altered* vWii didn't trigger an update, maybe making a NAND Dump (with hardware flasher) before updating, then updating the WiiU which update the vWii, reflashing the vWii NAND back would work.
it will depend what the WiiU does to check the vWii version.

*two users installed Wii's IOS with lower version number (bricking their Wii), checking for update didn't force the WiiU to re-download and replace vWii titles.
But Nintendo might change that in the future. Maybe they didn't expect that users already hack the Wii mode, so they didn't prepare alternative way to fix it.

IIRC WiiMC can do that ... I just don't know how to set it up exactly
