Is the WiiU hacked like the Wii yet? (Backups, Homebrew, etc)

No, But we're getting there, Keep reading!

Is there any kind of progress?

    One small step for Mario..

    YES :P

Fail0verflow Developed a software based exploit in Late 2013, but it will not be released.

In Febuary 2014, A separate hacking team unrelated to F0F has announced they they have also developed a parallel exploit, and have dumped the Boot ROM. It has been independently verified and the MD5 hashes match that of the F0F Exploit, Corroborating 0F's claims. They will not be releasing this exploit.

In June 2014, A usermode Exploit (though one only available in 4.1.0) was released.
This does not mean any kind of hack is available, as it does not provide full access to the system.

Also, Wii U games have been dumped, as well as their Key hashes. The Wii U Ancast key has also been dumped and made available.

As of March 2015, Some proof of concept Homebrew has been made available using the 4.1.0 Exploit.

As of April 2015, A Kernel Exploit (Yes, the one we've All been waiting for!) has been announced, and will be released Soon™.)

As of June 2015, a new Usermode exploit has been released.

As of September 2015, a Kernel Exploit has been released, and some rudimentary homebrew has been released, mainly memory editing/cheat programs, and some hacks for existing games like Smash Bros.

As of October 2015, a Rudimentary Backup Loader that uses the 5.3.2 Web browser exploit has been released, called Loadline. Many game backups are now able to be run, but a few games (Most notably Splatoon at time of writing) are incompatible.
    More information is available here.

A Compatibility list is available here.

As of December 2015, There are two seperate "IOSU" Based exploits currently in development. if successful, these will break the Wii U Wide open and allow Homebrew and Backup Launching capabilities similar to the Wii.

As of Febuary 2016, @smealum posted a video of an early 3DS-like EmuNAND based CFW for the WiiU, called RedNAND. So far it's simply proof of concept, and the code has not been released.

    As of May 2016,
An exploit allowing for homebrew on 5.5.1, the as current latest FW, was released.
Still ain't IOSU, but it's another step in the right direction.

In a seperate event, @smealum also released the proof of concept code for an IOSU based hack! It's still very early code, and there's still lots to do to get it working (as it will need to be paired with other exploits), but with time and work, this is likely the key we're all looking for!

So, Can we Run WiiU ISOs/Backups?

    Yes!
Please note that while compatibility is growing, some games will not work. check the compatibility lists before you begin.

    More information is available here.

A Compatibility list is available here.

What else can we do in WiiU Mode?

    • Run Backups? Yes! (Not every game however, there are a few that don't work yet, and many have yet to be tested.)
    • Run Homebrew? Yes, but it's very early and there's not much out there yet.
    • Use Action Replay style cheats in games? Yes!

How do I Hack my Wii U?

First: DO NOT UPDATE YOUR CONSOLE BEYOND WIIU 5.5.1!
(For compatibility with possible future exploits currently being investigated, do not update over 5.2.0!)

Then Follow this guide. It will take you step by step.

WARNING: The average user should NOT do this yet.
It is still a very technical process, and there are numerous bugs and issues with the exploit that may damage your system if you are not EXTREMELY careful!

I know everyone's excited that there's a backup loader, but I implore you to wait until the software behind it is more mature.

Is Wii Mode (vWii) hacked yet?

Yes! But there are some issues..

    What does that mean?
    What can we actually
    DO in vWii Mode?

Here’s a simple, easy to use list of our current progress in Hacking the Virtual Wii in the WiiU.
(Basically, most stuff works the same, with a few exceptions.)
    • Perform an Exploit? YES! (Here's a list of working exploits for vWii)
    • Run Unsigned Code? YES!
    • Dump the NAND? YES! (FSToolbox has been updated to work with the vWii.)
    • Restore the NAND? YES! But Be Careful!
      (NAND Resto
res are always dangerous if you don't know what you are doing, ESPECIALLY on the WiiU! Make sure you do!)
    • Install the Homebrew Channel? YES!
    • Run Emulators off an SD card? YES!
    • Install Emulators onto the NAND? YES!
    • Install Virtual Console/WiiWare WADS? YES!
    • Install and Run USB Loaders? YES! But a few games may not work. If it didn't work on the Wii, it won't work in vWii.
    • Run Retail Wii Discs? YES!
    • Run Foreign Retail Wii Discs RegionFree? YES!
    • Run BURNED Wii Discs? NO (The physical drive is different than the Wiis, and would require a new Drivechip.)
    • Use SNEEK on vWii? YES!(Crediar released the source code for the vWii version of SNEEK before leaving the Wii U hacking scene.)
    • Install Bootmii on vWii? NO (No Boot2 access yet, and there likely won't be, due to how vWii was designed.)
    • Install Priiloader on vWii? NO (Ditto)
    • Use Cheats/Mods through Gecko OS? YES! (Use Wiilauncher, which is an alternative to GeckoOS with AHBPROT patching for vWii)
    • Run GameCube Games? YES! (Nintendont is a compatibility layer for Gamecube games to run on the Wii and vWii. More info available here!)
    • Run Linux? Eh.. Kinda.. Thanks to a proof by Fail0verflow and some fantastic work by the Trinux team, a distribution of Linux running on all three cores of the Wii U's CPU running under vWii is under development. More information (and how you can help!) here.

So how do I mod vWii Mode?

So, you're gonna go through with it?
    Congratulations.
BTW, Your warranty is now Void. :P

An utterly FANTASTIC tutorial can be found here.
It will guide you step by step on how to mod your vWii.

Also, PLEASE read the other stickies in the forum, especially this thread.
It will tell you what is and isn't safe to install on your vWii. You don't want a brick on your hands, so you?

A quick note about Wii U Firmware and VWii:

Updating your Wii U will not impact your ability to hack VWii as they are entirely separate operating systems on the console.

HOWEVER: Improperly hacking VWii can cause it to brick, which will cause your Wii U to be unable to update, and may cause issues with Wii Mode hacks!
So Read the stickies, do your research, and be careful!

Any other cool stuff we can do?

Why yes, there is! For example:

You can use your Wii U Pro controller on your PC!

I'll update this with more more accurate information as time passes.

Hellboy2010 posted in damysteryman's thread showing an image of Wiiflow and La Mulana in vWii. I'm trying to see if I can get more detailed answers.

I was able to install WADs to the system menu with Multi Mod Manager and IOS 236. If you'd like, I can take a photo. All I did was install IOS 236, open Multi Mod Manager, change IOS to 236, and install the WADs I had sitting on my SD card. I did notice that a forwarder for Configurable USB Loader that I had didn't forward to the DOL on my SD card and instead froze the console, but others worked without issue.

Nice. Been wanting to see something like this :)

Also, just a few ideas for things to add:
    • Use SNEEK on vWii? (Reports I read said no, but needs more testing I think)
    • Install Bootmii on vWii?
    • Install Priiloader on vWii?
    • Use Cheats through Gecko OS?

I would like to know about Gecko OS as well. I have tried using it, but unable to use cheats for wii channels (Ex: Mega Man 9 and 10) since I don't have IOS236(I think that is one required for cheats in wii channels) installed as I don't know how to go about installing it... Thoughts appreciated as usual :)

not sure if this is the thread to post this in , but it seems the vwii is being treated as a real wii. By that I mean , the memory is only 512 like on the original wii.I just redownloaded all the crap from the store that I bought for my original wii and I ran out of space .I had to delete the wiiu transfer tool to make the last item I downloaded fit.

    Hardware limitations.

You can use an SD card to expand your vWii storage like a real Wii, and we're working on getting USB loaders to work. stay tuned. :P

Cool. Thanks. This is a good topic. Now we just need a topic that shows you how to go about installing this stuff on your Wii U and where to download the programs from.

You know, that 32 GB is allocated for the Wii U only and not the vWii Mode.

I can work on building an installation guide, but I don't actually have any of the hackable games! :P
