Hacking Wii USB loader help

So just modded a Wii again for the first time in years and got Nintendont working without issue from the hard drive. However when I add games (wbfs) to the hard drive they show up in USB loader but won't let me play them. When I press start the screen goes black and then back to homebrew channel.

Things I've tried -

Both USB ports
Hard drive in fat32 with wbfs folder
Wbfs formatted drive with games
With and without a disc in the drive

I'm tempted to think it's the hard drive but it's reading GameCube games without any issue

That takes me to a vwii link so think that's for Wii u? I'll try a USB and report back, yea up to date apps

vWii and Wii homebrew are the same thing.
