A lot of firmware that comes stock on routers are junk. Don't forget lots of users switch to tomato, dd-wrt, or open-wrt.

Also, proper mac filtering will only block what you tell it to and not all of the internet. As Kafluke said, it's highly dependent on the router, but if you really want to do this route and your firmware is the issue, I'd look into seeing if I could put one of those on my router. I have met some routers who just do not like to run the other firmwares though (frequent restarts etc).

Basically, MAC Filtering uses a device identification number to block or allow only certain things, or everything, and require making separate rules for multiple applications. The guide is wrong when it says it will block everything except LAN. It's just some routers are trash when it comes to options.

Exactly as EclipseSin said. If you want to delve into flashing your router with a 3rd party firmware, please make sure that you FULLY read the instructions. Especially with DD-WRT it's very easy to brick your router if you don't follow the instructions to the T. This includes sometimes flashing base versions first to get you into recovery mode before you can flash the latest fully supported version for your router.

I have a linksys wrt54g router.

This router is supported by all three of the 3rd party firmwares that @EclipseSin mentioned. Just please read the instructions when you flash.

We still use one of these on dd-wrt. IIRC, you can flash the firmware like a normal linksys update. Recommended to update, then flash again. Been a while since I did one of those though.

Careful. There are many different versions of this same router. At least 6 last time I checked. Some of them are a little harder to flash than others.
