Hacking Wii Motion Plus update on a soft modded wii?

So today I got Skyward Sword for Christmas but its asking me to update my wii which is softmodded.
If I update my Wii will it brick? Is there a way to get around it?

Not 100% sure on this, but you can try installing the updated IOSes found in Skyward Sword (don't quote me on this though, it's been a while).

A straight update shouldn't brick if you're already on 4.3. Otherwise, I would not update and just manually install the necessary IOSes (and of course, be careful with IOSes ending in 0)

Could I just copy my saves and format my Wii? I don't mind losing the hacks as this is the last game I will probably play on my wii.

You can do that (not sure on how it affects WFC)
You'll need to make new saves for each game and then copy your old ones, but that works fine if you are okay with the hassle.

If you update, no it won't brick your wii, you can install priiiloader as well as the hacks.ini to block disk updates.

And no there is no need to format the wii and start agaim, use Modmii if you want to update all system and custom ios
