She was a great character, flawed but sympathetic

Shane is great. I watched the movie first and thought it was OK, it was one of my first westerns though, and then I read the book then watch the movie again and I enjoyed the movie more after reading the book. I do think the book is better, though. Lots of people I know hate Joey, but I think he is just like a normal kid, that’s usually the big complaint I hear about it, idk.

The ending scene where Shane is shot and presumably dying and riding away on the horse into the landscape it’s Joey yelling his name is a fucking gut punch. Gets me every time. I very much love the landscapes of the film too, very pretty, but the look in that scene is next level with the dark skies.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the stereotypical westerns and spaghetti’s too, but my favorite westerns tend to be the more anti-violence or sort of the myth deconstruction-y sort of ones, like The Gunfighter, or High Noon, or Johnny Guitar. And then there’s stuff like McCabe and Mrs. Miller, that I just love, too.

Side note, I ignored westerns for so long, and it’s become one of my favorite genres. They rule.
