Why did SquareSoft and Enix merge?

Before the merge they were one if not the biggest rival in the gaming business. they used to push one another to make great games.

i mean was it just natural process or would have been dog eat dog in the end?

Squaresoft was in some big financial trouble after spending a ton of money to make Final Fantasty Spirits Within which complete failed to make any money, Enix came in to buy them as they wanted the Squaresoft name since Squaresoft was able to enter the western market which Enix themself had failed to do so. So basicly they both needed each other for money reasons.
