what modchip to buy for ps2.

Well, to play PS1 games you do.
I think the Matrix line is pretty much what is most supported now that include modbo which is a clone.
A lot of people will save the trouble (a hard task to solder a modchip in a slimline) and simply use softmods like swapmagic or freemcboot
 
+1 for Matrix Infinity/Modbo 4.0 (sold out on shoptemp) if you have really good soldering skills and wares.

For the MCBoot you will need to send a memory card to someone with a homebrew capable PS2 or find a premade one for sale online. It should be noted that it requires that you patch games before you burn or else they won't run.

Another option is to use a swap method such as with the Swap Magic which only requires using a homemade tool from a credit card, thin plastic knife, etc. for phat or a homemade tool to prevent the slim from detecting that the lid as been opened. The compatibility is very high and only a few games have problems (mainly due to having a slightly higher TOC than the SM disc).
