Looks like theres a plastic part under the rubber part that crumbled into pieces. Do I need a new joystick module or do I just need one of these caps?: https://www.amazon.com/HeOTER-Joystick-Thumbstick-Control-Replacement/dp/B0DKMX73Z2

If its the cap, can I just slide it over this nub?

I only needed the external pad. At first I was afraid, bit ended being a piece of cake to change
Same here, I only have experience with opening up consoles not handhelds. I found some videos where people open up the 3DS and replace a part of the circle pad without messing with the ribbon cables.

Glad to know it is easy to change, mine has a slice in it just from like something sharp going across it and it is the worst feeling in the world using it just cause it's such a small cut, but it bugs me so bad lol.

Plase be aware you DO NOT NEED to flip any tab to remove the ribbon cables, all of them just need to be pulled, if you twist the tab like normal ribbon connectors, the connectors will get damaged.

For $9 you might as well spend a tiny bit more and get teh whole module and rubber piece and do a full replacement. You can get them for $10 on aliexpress or like $15 on amazon

The part wears after a while and gets hard to move. So you might as well just do the whole part and only open the system 1 time

woooow when I did buy mine couldn't find any module replacement in less than 40 bucks.
Maybe I got lucky ? I did this last year and a local shop charged me $50 to install it

Albeit maybe a bit high for an install but I refuse to open handhelds besides the switch
