Too bad there's no other way to bypass that, thanks Nintendo..
From Ninty's point of view it's obvious: The only "official" reason to connect a drive to the Wii U is to use it for eShop games. So drives with other filesystems (for hacked vWii) are being spammed with annoying pop ups.

This is why I just use the B button during boot up so I avoid the Wii U OS altogether.

Why do you have a Wii U instead of a Wii?
I'm aware of the B button functionality. When you're about to play Wii U (games) the message pops up. That's all I'm saying.

In my experience it's going back to the Wii U Home Menu that triggers the message if a FAT32 drive is connected by USB. So that's dropping back from the settings, exiting a game, coming out of the web browser, returning to Wii U Home Menu from vWii, initial bootup... it's annoying, which is why I'm considering purchasing one of these. I'm just worried it won't be compatible even when it's been formatted to FAT32 although I know there are plenty of reports of 256GB SD Cards working perfectly.

Don't wanna be that "Oh no, please not this again" guy but an IOSU exploit may solve all this. If it's ever coming.
Till then we can pray for 512 GB card prizes to decrease quickly and/or use UStealth.

So you're saying you're hoping an IOSU exploit will get rid of the nag screen and 512GB SD Cards are supported?

I would bet 512 are already supported. 256 cards are working so chances are good ...
About the "format your drive" message:
With an IOSU exploit it would be either possible to disable the message or to give Loadiine the ability to launch from USB as well.
So all you're doing then is filling up your drive with your GameCube, Wii and Wii U games, use UStealth on it and you're good to go.

Edit: Of course Loadiine would need the ability to "detect" hidden drives as the USB Launcher does. :)

Makes sense. Personally I'd like to move away from USB HDD storage and just have everything flash memory (less crap to carry when I travel, less noise, one less thing to plug into A/C) so I don't mind the extra expense for a half terabyte card. From my backed up collection I probably have about 300GB worth so I could definitely use it.

(Incidentally: wow. Half terabyte on a tiny little scrap of plastic. When I was a kid 512MB was a large storage size, a friend of mine bought a 3.5" Seagate IDE harddrive for his Amiga and we never filled it even 25% up. It cost more than £149, and that was in 90s prices...)

I'm with you when it comes to mobility but there's one thing about SD cards f*cking everybody (me included) off here -> loading times.
(and the prizes of course)
So if Loadiine would work from USB I'd be very happy with a small 2,5" drive attached to my console.

Haven't been that bad from my experience. Super Mario 3D World is sluggish but maybe it's that I've got a particularly good card right now (SanDisk 64GB microSD stolen from my phone) because it's not unbearable, and MK8 actually loads faster from card than disc (I would know, I play it A LOT).

Well, given that my Wii is disconnected and that I only have my Wii U hooked up to my PC monitor's HDMI input, I really don't want to hook up two consoles at once with only one HDMI port on the monitor. It's too much of a hassle for me. Wii via HDMI looks pretty bad to be honest. I was only offering a suggestion, really. :P
