Hacking vWii forwarder questions

Hi there folks,

Experimenting with some vWii forwarders. I have multiple emulators on my sd card and accessible via the homebrew channel.

What I'd like to do is be able to start these emulators from the Wii U main menu and have found forwarders I can download.

My question is, is it necessary to install a vWii forwarder channel installed first? And then install the Wii U forwarder to link to it? Or will the Wii U forwarder link to the sd card directly?
