Hmm when I enter the modified VC game it prompts to reset the savedate, however, when doing so, it freezes.

It was GB. Super Mario Land 2 and I was trying to play Pokemon Yellow. Isn't the correct value "0FF"? I haven't tested that though.

Pokemon Crystal works in Link's Awakening, but Pokemon Yellow froze on initializing save in Golf.

Yes, you can. It's really slow in the GB(C)/NES VC. I don't know if this works with the GBA VC.
