Can i use a powered usb hub to connect my external 2tb hdd to the wiiu so that i wont need to use the y cable splitter, also will the hub work for vWii game backups as well.

Some powered hubs do work, yes. Since they got exernal power, as long as it's enough for your HDD, it will work.
