I've been thinking that a possible solution to a semi-brick could use a solution similar to the old Duplicated Channel Remover. I believe that this involved setting the version of the channels very high, so they would not be used. But if the channel versions could be changed, surely the System Menu version could be lowered to v1 from v256 or whatever we're on now, and then it would prompt an update on next disc insert?

Any pointing out of obvious flaws is welcome, it's late and I probably haven't thought it through

Thanks, but I simply wouldn't know where to start. The one danger is to apply the version change I assume you would have to trucha sign the Wii System Menu, which means IOS37 would probably brick your Wii altogether (although you are updating afterwards with the correct menu, so it probably wouldn't cause problems).

Any good coders out there?
