So how do I get Tropix to work on my EZ5? (I get dual blank screens upon boot)

From what I remember it hasn't worked for me ever across many of the more recent kernal versions (including the latest 2 beta). Old threads I've read from here and around the net mention something about clean mode and creating an ini file but other threads I read indicate that this is no longer applicable under the current kernal.

Is it logged somewhere (or should I) as being a non-working rom so that the ezflash team can look at it? Or does some patch need to be made to the rom itself (I'm running the "officially" recognised version as dictated by Offlist).

A lot of games have issues, use the latest official releases of the kernel and firmware as well. Try enabling the DMA if you can, I dunno much about the EZV compared to the Vi, but you can enable and disable the DMA which will change whether a game works or not. The latest two alpha updates are more for the Vi then the other carts
