I want to buy this R4i soon and I was wondering if it is real or fake. If it was fake would it still work if there was new 3DS updates?

It's a fake/clone cart. Get yourself an acekard 2i or r4i gold 3ds (from r4ids.cn), if you want a decent flashcart. If you want more features (gba emulation, media playback, special homebrews, real-time-save, etc.) go for a SuperCard DSTwo, although it's a lot pricier than the other two.

Even if it is I have a certain price limit and can only buy one from Amazon so I may end up getting a clone. Im kinda new to this but will clones still work if the 3DS gets updated?

Certain clones do have compatibility to 3ds, but most never update when a new 3ds firmware update is released. Besides, there's no guarantee the clone you buy already has compatibility to a 3ds. You're better off getting a decent flashcart that has a good reputation.

The same team that makes that flashcard has another different flashcard for $4.50 right here. I know it's not Amazon but it's half the price for the same product.
