Hacking Thinking of getting an unopened N3DS

Before I do, wasn't there someone looking for a hard-modded one for research purposes? I am considering attempting it (Unsure if the person wanted JP/EU/USA model), but I recall hearing something about not being able to turn it on until the mod is done?

I can't remember which thread it was, or if it was already done. Does anyone happen to know which thread it was/who needed it/why?
