Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has revealed that the company’s successor to the Wii could have ended up as a portable rather than a traditional games console. Speaking to online gaming publication Gamasutra Iwata stated that Nintendo were previously thinking about making the Wii U a standalone system, rather than making it work with a base system. Would you have preferred Nintendo to take the portable route with the Wii U, or are you happy it’s a brand new home console?[/p]

“During the roundtable discussions there were such arguments about should we make it capable of being a standalone system or should we make it work only with the [base console] system,”

“We came to the conclusion that this controller is only going to show the images generated and processed by this hardware unit — and sent from the hardware unit wirelessly. That means sharper graphics. A battery couldn’t do that.”

Pretty interesting. It would have been a good move to actually make it a stand-alone handheld. Tablets these days are very popular and apple reigns supreme, if nintendo were to make a dedicated handheld that was also a tablet, it would be interesting to see what the reaction of the people would be. On the other hand, apple wouldn't be too happy that they would use the idea...

Popularity would be quite assured. But as for apple not like liking the idea, Samsung and Blackberry too have their tablets released. So Nintendo would not have been the second one.

So that would make it the 4th pillar of Nintendo

1st one is a console, 2nd one is the Gameboy, 3rd one is the DS and the 4th one could have been a tablet like portable.

Lookin at the way the controller is designed, makes sense. But good thing it's a home console, will open doors to even more creativity.

Well, I actually meant that apple has way lower prices for its online store. Nintendo on the other hand is more of the retail releases, and their prices are somewhat higher for their online store. The question would be: will people still buy games and apps when they are priced pretty high in comparison to the competition? A tablet has a different target audience than a handheld, so for nintendo they would have to come up with a new business strategy

Nah its better as it is now. I'd probably look like a fool trying to flap the machine around just to play some of the games. I don't think I'd want to do that in public places...

i'm glad they took the console route. even as it is now, it looks like it can be packed for travel easily anyway.

one thing that'd be a cool addition is if you can charge the Wii U's console so you can put it in your car while traveling to play console games, that'd be outstanding.

That would be outstanding but dangerous too.
