1. Not possible. We're blocked by the drive's firmware.
2. Probably possible.

Really, just buy a modchip.

What modchip do you recommend?
I've been looking at a few, but I'm not sure what one is best

I would go for a flatmii. Or i would wait for the other one with SATA support.

Yeh i've looked at flatmii, but don't you always need a computer to run the games?

Yes, then wait for another solution which plugs into the flatcable, but loads .isos from an external hard drive. There's already one announced(or maybe already released too).

Nah, it hasn't been released. And nobody knows if it's real yet... the supposed development team hasn't been heard from since 2006.

I hope the flatmii team develops a 3in1 solution soon, loading from pc, loading from discs with 3x speed and loading from external usb2 and/or firewire drives with NTFS support. And this all as flatcable chip *dreaming*.

actually achieving 6x drive speed isnt that big of a problem. sure its drive firmware related, but it is not to unlike the firmware mods for the xbox 360. the hard part is getting a pc to "see" the Wii dvd drive, then its just a matter of going through lines of code. you get the idea. someone with enough time can figure this out.( but be sure that a few wii drives will be ruined, but you can't make an omelet....you know that old chestnut

I'd like a disc tray light that's always on and does random effects.

And a homebrew internet channel with Flash 10 support and other stuff.

Fairly petty, I know

i'd also prefer USB 2.0 - for smoother playback of divx from a USB harddisk.
and i agree with the flash 10 support for smooth fullscreen playback from the bbc i player, etc.
