It looks like, they took every overly difficult platform levels, from the other Mario games and gave them a new skin. Than threw them all into one game. Nintendo can go Fuck themselves, they have become just like team sonic. BTW I hate controlling games with lots of jumping using an analog, the Dpad is so much better. Arcade controls suck, thanks a lot Sony.

I'm guessing you have never played galaxy 2 and never found the impossible platforming levels of sunshine.

Played and beaten both games, challenge is a GOOD thing. Something missing from far too many games nowadays. Controls aren't what was wrong with Mario Sunshine anyways, it was the camera. I certainly found those block jumping levels in Sunshine too, NOT the hardest thing i've ever accomplished in a video game. Completely fair if you know what you're doing.

No, my issue here is why you brought Sonic Team and Sony into this. Makes no sense and was totally out of place in this conversation. Dpad controls suck in a 3D game, this has been established.

The camera angle in the video is horrid. 2d/Side scrolling Mario is way better IMO.

I can understand how one would think that the fixed camera would hinder one's ability to judge, say, where Mario is jumping or something. However, if what ol' Miyamoto keeps saying about the 3D effect making platforming significantly easier is true, there shouldn't be any problems. I'm quite confident that the team behind Super Mario Galaxy knows what they're doing!

It's like they're finally acknowledging that the powerups in Super Mario Bros 3 are the ones we want to use most. Seeing the Raccoon leaf and Tanooki Suit again, along with the musical note blocks, were welcome sights in the trailers.

But how well it will play is what will matter most. We do not need another "Sonic 4", which while looking fantastic, never felt right controls-wise.
Until I see Mario turn into a statue, this just looks like the raccoon suit with a face lift to me. Also why would they add the raccoon suit and take away the ability to fly? This just seems lame to me. I am excited about a new portable Mario game, but I find my self comparing it to the galaxy games, and it just doesn't look as good. It does look fun, but I think I will be disappointed if I can't turn into the statue or fly. It's like they are lying to us with the trailers... "Here's that suit you really liked... We made some modifications- took out everything good, but you can have it back now. Isn't that exciting?"

Gee, thanks Nintendo.

I played Mario 3DS at E3 and overall I really enjoyed it. They took the best things about the 2D side scrollers and the best things about the 3D games and made it into one Mario game. I have a few thoughts as far as some of the concerns addressed in the thread:

While its not clear that the raccoon leaf/tanooki suit can allow Mario to fly in this one, there really weren't any areas in the stages demoed to give him enough of a running start to test that. That being said I do hope that can be an option in other levels.

The fire flower can destroy bricks like in the 3D games which I really liked.

I'm not sure if the d pad even works in this game as I didn't even think to try it, but I can see where I would sometimes prefer it.

You have to be careful in that even when Mario is moving left to right, it's still a 3D plane. I died once while moving across a bridge because I moved the circle pad a little too far up while trying to move across and he walked right off. It could also be me though, since I've always had slight issues with games on a 3D plane.

Overall it was one of my favorite things I played at E3 and will be picking it up. It seems to provide a neat combination of the side scroller and 3D mario game.

Did you try to turn into the statue?

The dpad works as a means to control the camera angle. I talked to someone else who played it at E3. Also, the developers stated in a closed-room discussion that there's no flying in this game. They say it wouldn't work with the level design and this particular type of 3D. Also pretty sure no one has managed to turn into a statue.

They basically took the Tanooki Suit and ripped the awesome out of it.

I hope we get some very nice powerups besides tailed Rabbit Mario and Fire Mario.

Actually it's raccoon, not rabbit. Rabbit Mario was in Mario Land 2.

That's what I meant. It's the rabbit plus a tail whip. Or the raccoon minus the flight, as you prefer.

The rabbit suit let you flutter alot longer, this tanooki suit is basically yoshi's flutter jump plus a spinning tail attack. I get that they always have to make the same power ups appear and then add a few new ones that will probably be never used again, but i kinda wished they made powerups a bigger emphasis in gameplay. Hope they make the frog suit come back lol

"Mario will keep All his Powerups as long as he doesn't take damage(Except for the invincible star)"

What exactly does this mean?

i think this means, that you won't have a power gauge, like in SM Sunshine or 64, but your 'power' depends on the power-ups you take. Just like in SMB1-3 and SMW.

I'm definitely excited for it. It's on my must-buy list right behind Luigi's Mansion 2. It's almost like classic Mario platforming + modern Mario platforming mixed together to form a game full of awesomeness.

I like the camera angle TBH...It's not straight to the side, and it's not right up against Mario. It's different, which is probably one of the reason people disliked it (Even though everyone bitches about the series not changing much, or gameplay mechanics not changing much, etc.).

The levels looked a little lackluster, but it's just the demo, so I'm sure other levels will look more "full" and not lifeless and dull.

What? Power gauge?
It just means the powerups won't be timed like in the previuous 3D Mario games, it'll be on until you get hit.

It means there won't be a set amount of time you can have a powerup for, unlike in some 3D mario games
