At the end of 2010 there were 40 million Wiis sold in just the US. At thar time, HBC's install stats showed about 600,000 of them had the homebrew channel installed.

So that's 1.5% just counting the US. Counting globally (84 mil) that'd be 0.71%.
That's still a small amount when compared to total sales and not nearly enough to claim that it would have "massively increased the popularity" of the system.

Edit: Oh never mind.

And how many homebrew channels are installed today? Has the numbers exponentially increased?

Piracy does more than just influence console sells for pirates; piracy increases the popularity of the system. In essence, people who don't pirate are somewhat influenced by piracy.

I'm guessing the number 600,000 isn't as accurate as it seems either. How do they keep count? Is it number of unique wii's or is it from unique IP addresses? I have installed 10+ homebrew channels for people with the same SD card, I know at least 2 of them who refuse to go online for paranoid/other reasons. So it's not like that wii would have reported back to TT. Also, it's not like the counter went up as I only downloaded the newest channel once...

Unique installs, and while that doesn't count offline installs generally Wiis are kept online as there's no banning and people who are technologically-sound )capable of hacking the system and all that) tend to have wireless internet access available in the house (ISPs often give wireless gateways instead of a straight-up modem nowadays).

Can only nudge a number that's less than one percent up so far. :P

When I was in China a few months ago, I don't think I saw a single store selling legit dvd's, games or music. I expected to see at least one :|

IIRC some companies provide little official support to China. Nintendo only localized five cartridge DS games into Chinese. (that's excluding DSiWare)

OK, I don't know which mall you are going but here u wont find a Gamestop that does that, they'd rather give you a hell of a beating b4 they sell you R4s, not saying its not possible but here that's not happening... By the way, what has been killing their business is not only flash carts and isos, its how they want to make a huge profit out of a single game, for example, they sell you a new 360 game for 60, you take it home and play it, return it to the store and they give you 20 for it, then they resell it for 55, lets do the math: 60 - 20 + 55 = $95... and that's for one game on a single buy return to store loop. Imagine how much they get if a single game returns to the store many times.... That is whats killing their business ;)

Apply that logic to used cars, and you'll see how little sense that makes.

Car dealers actually find the way to make you think you are getting a nice deal when in reality they are screwing you (at least here). How would you feel if you buy a game for 60, return it almost new and they gave you 1/3 of what you paid for it and then you find out the resell it for 55? I dont know you but id be pissed...

There's a thread about this in one of the general thread.

Read that, or better still go and do some research on economics

Know what's funny? Gamestop does the same thing. If you look at their ads, gamestop and your average car dealer use a lot of the same tactics. But, still...

You're right, I would be pissed, but that's the reason there is a private market. You can sell the game yourself for however much you want. Gamestop is not the only game in town. In fact there's an online alternative that will pay a good chunk more than Gamestop if you send it into them. Maybe you have heard of them. Amazon.com. Then you could go the local route and sell your games on craigslist, or you can sell them at a yard sale. People act as though Gamestop is the only place on earth that buys and sells used games. Maybe that's why they do so well.
