Gaming SSBU Local Wireless question

For the people who have already tried, does it need an Access Point like a wireless router or it connects Switch-to-Switch directly?

The main reason I ask this is to try using a VPN to play online using the Local Wireless mode instead of the regular online mode, as a LAN Connection

Have you ever tried out of range for Switch to Switch, but in range for the same access point/router? Or is possible to do sort of a "Switch to Switch VPN"
