Latest update to the Super Smash Bros Brawl website certainly deserves it's own post: The devs have revealed that in game you can pick up an item called an assist trophy which will release a random non playable character do to damage to your opponents (kinda like pokeballs). The characters are not playable and presumably perform a quick attack before disappearing like Jump Superstars. Characters revealed so far are: Hammer Bros, Samurai Goro (from F-Zero) and a pup from Nintendogs.

See links for pics. Will be interesting how many support characters make it!

I saw the site and the way it was presented, I thought Samurai Goro was a new playable character instead of an assist trophy. Bleh, too bad.

Assist trophies sound cool, but yeah, they're just PokeBalls. I won't see them too much because no one uses items in competitive play.

really? any games i have played (be it friends or others) have always had items.

Looking at it purely from a gameplay perspective, it's the same as pokeballs though..which is kinda lame. I wish you had at least some limited control over them. Like..maybe you can get them to follow you, or make them jump when you do. Doing that would at least make a strategic difference.

Yup. Items add too much random element and it's difficult to tell who's better than another person if someone can win out of pure luck. I said competitive play.

I guess the Nintendog would be the one we saw blocking your opponents character.

I wish the Hammer Bro was playable he looks pretty cool.

I find it very funny that since the site typoed Samurai Goroh's name (notice the "h"), everyone else does too.

they should add more pokemon as characters i mean cmon wo needs a jigglypuff when we can have charizard or tyranitar

New assist character revealed: Dr. Wright (from Sim City SNES)

First paragraph from the page is quite interesting too:

What? You mean THAT Dr. Wright? The one from the SNES version of SimCity? Well, I guess Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the kind of game where anyone can show up and anything can happen!

Interesting to see more non-Nintendo characters make it into the mix even if it's only an assist trophy - it would at least seem to suggest that a decent roster of non-Nintendo characters may appear.

From what I remember, the SNES Sim City was actually made by Nintendo, considering that BOWSER showed up as a random chaos that could happen...
