I still have a game backup on my Slim's HDD, which I'm no longer able to remove without formatting because my lil bro updated my PS3. Hopefully Sony can't detect it somehow :\ . Anyway, I'm not too worried about this since I have a second PS3 for hacking purposes and not connected to the internet, though I still need to find a replacement lens or drive for it. Until then, I at least have legitimate reasons for playing backups of games that I own on it

That's exactly what I suggest people do: buy two PS3's, one for legal network and one for your "homebrews" (Aka, piracy).

Notice: Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. Violation of the System Software Licence Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently.

To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.

Circumvention devices and game piracy damage our industry and can potentially injure the online experience for you, our loyal PlayStation customers, via hacks and cheats.

Many PlayStation.Blog readers have asked how we intend to deal with these incidents that they have been reading about in the gaming press, and this is our initial response.

By identifying PlayStation 3 systems that breach our guidelines and terminating their ability to connect to PlayStation Network, we are protecting our business and preserving the honest gameplay experiences that you expect and deserve.

Rest assured, this message does not apply to the overwhelming majority of our users who enjoy the world of entertainment PlayStation 3 has to offer without breaching the guidelines detailed above, and we urge you to continue doing so without fear.

EDIT: Made into a real post now that threads are merged.

If you hack your system then there's always a chance of a big crackdown like this. Odds are if I get a PS3 it'll go legit. My Xbox 360 has been legit and it's nice. Wouldn't mind getting another PSP and going legit with that too.

Sony does it, Microsoft does it, I wonder if Nintendo will raise their banhammer with the new 3DS due for release in America next month?

Unless nintendo's online service gets a LOT better. There is no threat to be banned on it.

oh man the sony fan boys on that blog comments are sickening. i support them banning people who are not abiding by TOS for PSN. it is their network and they have that right. what annoys me is game updates. if my console is offline, and i don't want your stupid update, then i want that choice.

i understand why the updates are there, but its still a loss of rights. oh well, little guys mean nothing in this field.

Wow this posting bug is bad eh?
You can get around it by putting
Code:

Anyways Is that it? Banned from psn....what are they going to do about people buying second consoles for offline?
For all they know the hackers might find a way to unban them...the original xbox 360's had a way I believe...

Eh, too lazy to change it up, so I'm just quoting myself from Kotaku:

So that stops them from going online...

Like they care Sony. Honestly. What else is it going to do? If the Homebrew hackers only are doing homebrew only, and not pirate, if you brick their console, they can come after you.

But for pirates, they don't get to go online? Boo-hoo. Online games suck anyways, because even if your keys weren't leaked, the online would still be broken in games. Seriously, what is this stopping exactly Sony? They can still get free games.

Fighting a losing battle. You can only hope that there are more honest people, then there are people who can be persuaded by the life of a pirate. Otherwise, your console won't make the 10 year plan that you had lined up for it. 5 years down Sony, can you last another 5 years just banning people from PSN?

Maybe if you guys actually gave the community what they wanted, such as otherOS, allow homebrew, give backwards compatibility, this wouldn't happen. Afterall, that's what GeoHot did in the first place right? He wanted OtherOS back. He didn't use your servers at all, so what difference does it make if you ban him from PSN at all? Also, trying to get people's information from just watching a video and commenting on it? You don't own the internet or the law Sony, so stop acting like you do. Also, there are a lot of people who hack their PS3 to allow stored games from an External HDD. They don't pirate anything, and you're threatening to ban them too? Great way to lose fans to Microsoft isn't it?

Hacking = Amazing stuff that gives us the most out of our console. It allows us to entertain ourselves to the highest point we can get from it, and you're trying to take it away? Fuck off.

I'm glad I don't give you guys any money now. After the way I was treated from your customer service back when I got my first PlayStation 1, I can't wait until you guys get out of gaming business. Sure I play PS2, but did I pay you for it? Nope. I play PS2 games, do I give you any money? Absolutely not. While I may be a pirate of myself for certain consoles and games, I seriously hope that everyone pirates the shit out of the PS3 where Sony just loses an unbelievable amount of profits. Their products are definitely not the greatest (I'm referring to all of their products here). The sooner Sony is out of the gaming business, the better. (Edit comment)

Sony...

...actually thought people would fucking listen?

What's this shit about ToS?

Honestly, I think that ToS's and EULA's etc. should be void in a court of law seeing as no one reads those fucking 50 page piles of boredom.

If you dont read it then thats YOUR fault isnt it?
They provide them to be read by you, you even agreed to reading them.
The reason they are that long is because it contains a lot of legal mumbo jumbo which is neccesary to make the thing legal and thus usefull

Except with all of that legal mumbo jumbo, nobody can really understand it unless you actually know a thing or two about law. And while a lot of people post thinking that they do, nobody really does unless you're in law school or took a course on it. It's like documents on a car and all that stuff. They word it so bad and confusing that it's basically entrapment.

Im not saying they make sense, all Im saying is that a ToS and an EULA are there for a reason.
I myself read every contract to the letter and if I have questions about what something means I ask the company or a friend who goes to law school.
Do people realize that a simple typo can make an entire EULA invalid? A simple missing of punctuation or lack of capitalletters?

Oh I know they're there for a reason. But be honest, most people who play their consoles, don't know the first thing about the ToS or EULA is stating. Nobody understands it. And nobody wants to sit on the phone for hours listening to someone who can barely speak english, describe each little thing. I know it's there to protect Sony's ass, but it fucks over the consumer as most people think it means "don't do this, don't do that, don't do this or that", because that's what the thing sounds like when someone reads it. They should revise it, every company should, revise it to make it clear, that even a 5th grader can understand it.
