Sega Genesis advice?

I'm thinking of getting a Sega Genesis and a flash cart. Witch version is the best to get?

Get the Model 2 - it's smaller, compatible with the 32X and the SEGA CD and Stereo sound, Model 1 only offered Stereo sound on the headphone jack. It's also cheaper and it's easier to find accessories for it.

The only drawback is that the Master System Power Converter Model 2 is much harder to find and much more expensive than the Model 1 version, but if you have no interest in that, it's a better choice.

EDIT: Oh, you meant the flashcart? Yeah, get the EverDrive, preferably the latest model.

Of course Everdrive, but there are two different Genesis versions. Which is the one to get, Mega Everdrive or Everdrive MD? Both are legit and from Krikzz.

Sound is the most popular reason to get model 1. Not as many users care about Power Base Converter or those early non-TMSS games.

Frankly I'd leave alone the poor composite encoding Genesis has. 32X or any other device that utilizes RGB will just bypass it.

The Non "MD" version you would want the MD stands for Mega Drive and yea your gonna be using the American Genesis

Since he's planning on buying a flashcart, he wouldn't need one, anyway. As for the cartridge itself, I'd recommend the more expensive Mega Everdrive. It has more features, including real-time save capability, which is perfect for all of those old action games which don't support saving at all.

If you're looking for something on a cheaper side, you could always take a look around AliExpress. They're selling Everdrive clones, though they're almost as expensive as the genuine product, so it's up to you to decide whether or not it's worth the risk.

Also, keep in mind that there are many Genesis clones out there, including those two-in-one and three-in-one combos, which let you play Super Nintendo and NES games as well. You won't be able to connect a 32X or a Sega CD, but it all depends on what you're looking for. Since you don't seem to care about original games, you might as well get a combo console and get a flashcart for the SNES as well. The good ones, like Everdrive, work with the clones just fine.

Sound is a bit wonkey on some of the clones mind you so if the OP does go the clone way hopefully he will read up on the clones first

That's very true - I was merely speaking from a collector's perspective.

In any case, the only two real choices are the Model 1 which has no Stereo output on the TV connector and requires a headphone jack splitter to output Stereo or the Model 2 which outputs Stereo natively through the TV connector but has no headphone jack or volume control - everything else is a matter of stylistics, meaning which SEGA CD model he'll want to use.

After a chit-chat over PM, we came to the conclusion that the Model 1 will work out better for him purely because he's more interested in getting the Model 1 SEGA CD somewhere down the line which matches the Model 1 Genesis stylistically.

The quality of visuals and sound between the Model 1 and model 2 are essentially the same - problems pop up only when there is some hardware damage in play and that can be corrected by replacing certain parts. At the end of the day, both models are good choices.

Mega also stands for Mega Drive, so Mega vs MD isn't a region difference, they are two different flashcarts (and either one will work with Genesis).
