Hacking Retrieve serial number?

Is it possible to retrieve the serial number from a Wii-console by software? I am trying to mod the Wii-console of a friend, changing the shop channel to another country, but the Wii keeps saying the serial number from the casing is incorrect. It's my suspicion that the guy who originally modded this Wii with a Wiikey didn't bother to keep the internals with the right casing.

So, is there any homebrew tool that can retrieve the original serial number (or temporarily emulate another serial#)?

The best I could think of is use the Wii Backup Disc (the pink fish disc leaked from Nintendo). Note that it needs a functioning IOS16 (v257, included on the ISO's update partition).

Dialexio is right. You can run it via a USB loader if you want as well. When you run it, it will show the serial in the upper right.
