Replacing lost phone through insurance

So, just a quick question - if a cell phone gets lost and you claim it through the insurance you have taken out on it, I assume the IMEI gets blacklisted with the carrier so it can no longer be used, right?

Off-Topic: I remember back in 2011, when I used to be with T-mobile. My G1 had battery issues, so what happened was that I've called T-mobile to replace my G1. They didn't have any in stock because it has been blacklisted back in 2010. So I had to settle for a much middle-range smartphone known as the T-mobile comet. The thing is they made me pay $40 for the phone with includes the insurance from my contract. So they will charge you if you're going replace the phone that's middle range and higher.

On-Topic: Yes, if they phone gets blacklisted then the carriers won't support it anymore.

Same with Sprint.

Your only choice if that happens and you find the phone again is flash it to another carrier (which is illegal, in most cases), or just sell it as a "bad ESN, flashable phone".

If the carrier is decent they will blacklist the phone however while say its blacklisted in the USA it would still work in Europe and such
