I know this might not be the place to say it, or stuff like that, but I just want to put this out.

Earlier today I was going to browse the temp when I had a feeling I should update my SD card backup. I plugged my micro SD into my computer, copied everything to a folder on my computer, ejected, inserted it back.

The first red flag was that my splash didn't show at all. I booted to a nonthemed home menu with none of my stuff there. I turned the DS off and checked to make sure it was in correctly and inserted all the way. It was.

So I plugged it back into my computer, and lo and behold, this was shown:

I had apparently averted disaster moments before it struck.

My next idea was to format and test the card with H2testw. The results were not good.

The card in question was this one:

It seems my SD Card was dying. This story goes to show that proper backups can go a long way, as all data was backed up before this happened.

I want this to be a warning to not slack off on making backups. It can mean the difference between a lot of pain and an easy fix.

Do Sandisk cards tend to have problems?

Honestly this is true for a lot more than just 3DS SD cards. I find it insane how lax people are with backing up their data in general.

I lost vacation photos due to an sd card actually refusing to be read by anything anymore. Been backing things up ever since.

I think it's not REAL common, but it is getting more common with Sandisk than it used to be.
For this reason alone I do backups at least once a month.

Sandisk are also one of the most common targets by counterfeiters.

All the ones I bought were at walmart. I know this doesn't completely remove the risk for it, but it does lower it considerably.

While not a guarantee, I tend to buy directly from a large retailer, rather than a market place or ebay seller. Its much harder for them to penetrate that supply chain. I've tended to have good luck with Samsung cards.

[email protected]k3rizz3k same as me, except I use Amazon instead, double checking it's actually sold by Amazon and not a marketplace seller. I wouldn't touch anything with flash memory in it from ebay or a marketplace seller with a 10 foot pole.
